  1. do much the same fishing as you and actually just plumped for an 8000 after similar umming and ahhing between that and the 10000. the 10000 will be far more suited in my view. the 18000 is much heavier and would feel unmatched to the rods I'd imagine you'd team it up with. there is no meaningful difference in drag or line capacity (for your type of fishing; i got 350 yards of 50lb braid on the 8000) and the 10000 is far more of an all rounder. owned a smaller stella for some time now and it's streets ahead of any other reel i've used. whichever you buy you won't regret it.
  2. catching squid quickly and reliably can be a pain in the backside. you can see the guides still fishing for fresh squid hours after they've picked their clients up and often well past high tide cos they know how important they are to catching kings and jews. sometimes you can get a dozen in 10 minutes. sometimes you're messing about with jigs for hours... the best advice i can give you is: when it's rained you need to be nearer the fresh water - ie. outer harbour. if the water is dirty move on. you need kelp and ideally sandy spots. see the catch squid guide. i've had my best results on the inside of south head or the outside of north head. lots of people persevere with middle head but it's only ever worked in fits and starts for me, plus i've tended lose too many jigs. obelisk bay is also touted, again never really produced for me. if you can get yourself out of bed early (3am) then you'll be banking squid by fishing slinky malinky's drifting method under the spit. see how to section. then fish the morning high and catch some zeds on the sofa in the afternoon... the alternative is to catch them the night before (or several nights before and freeze them) from any wharf that has kelp and bright light. obvious though it may sound, as with any type of fishing slowly building up a network of mates to call about where they are on any given weekend also pays dividends.
  3. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyytteee - amazing... Just work in a large Jewfish next time and you'll have the most viewed post!
  4. I got a bit obsessed by doing exactly this last year made a contraption that worked out of a plastic clothes linen bin and plastic gauze lining. Drop a brick in the bottom and tie it to something solid and it worked just fine.
  5. I've spent the last few years adapting to salt water fishing from carp and barbel fishing having moved from the UK. The best floating bait for carp is dog biscuit. Dog biscuits outfish bread and can be fired out with a catapult as loose feed further and more accurately. There are three main secrets here. The first is obvious: get the fish feeding before you wet a line. The second is to keep the line out of the water. The main way to do this is by buying a carp controller float. Not sure if you can get them over here but they are readily available on the net. The last is less obvious but VITAL to your hook up rates: get the hook mounted on TOP of the biscuit OUT of the water. This is tricky because the hook weighs more than the biscuit so if you try to simply super glue it on it will always flip hook side down. So the method is... Glue two biscuits together. Then glue on a BB (or similar size) split shot in between the two. You should have several made up at this stage ready to go - dog biscuits last ages. Lastly, glue on a size 6 or 8 on the other side in between the biscuits that you know will be outweighed by the split shot. Carp will hoover up all your free offerings and reject the one with the hook hanging from it in the water so mounting the hook this way really is crucial. Hope this helps. Let me know if it works! PS - if anyone reading this knows of a place to catch 8kg+ carp within an hour of Sydney please let me know..
  6. Where is Spain? Top of their qualifying group. Torres and Fabregas anyone? 25% of the vote for Croatia! Give me strength...
