lots of marlin raised off sydney today, i was on the shelf shark fishing in 23.5 degree water

g'day guys sorry about the late report but been a little busy, anyway here goes weft botany heads on monday at around 6am with the intention of heading to browns to fish the bottom and have a bit of a troll with the hope of finding marlin. Set out to the botany fad's for a quick look not much in close and a couple small dollies out wider so pushed on to browns. Set up the 2 winches and dropped down for our first run, using salmon and stripe tuna flesh baits. After the bottom lines were set i took a salmon frame and put it in the burley pot and gave it a hit "just for the hell of it" first pass of our drift produces nothing on the bottom so we pull up and head back over to commence another drift. Arrive at the mark, deploy winches and walk over to the burley pot and give it another hit. Walked over to check the winches - not much happening there, i look to the backof the boat and see a bloody nice shark in the water!! Within a couple of seconds we have a shark trace out with a salmon head on the end of it, at this stage the shark is doing casual laps of the boat commin in occasionally to try and bite the motor/hull. At first ignores the bait, so hit the burley buckey/add some tuna oil into the equation and the swimming becomes more erratic. Waited for another pass and drop the bait in front of him, he takes a look, gives a bump and thats about it, so let the bait down a little deeper, follows it down, takes it and runs with the reel in freespool for about 30 sec's we lock up and strike, were on!! for a few minutes anyway, she leaps clear of the water re entersd and throws the hook- bugger! Bring in slack line and examine the bait, all is fine except the hook wich was dull to say the least! anyway with the shark now back at the boat we attempt round 2 feed the bait out she circles it and eventually runs with it. Now this time we know the hook is a little less than great so give her a good chance to swallow the bait. Eventually the time comes we push the drag up and strike, she comes up solid! takes off on a decent run, another spectacular leap in the air followed by another run, we had her to the boat in pretty quick time on 24kg, this is where the fun starts....... Flyer goes in the gills solid and she SEEMS pretty tame, with only one flyer on board took a large fixed gaff and took a shot a bit further down, secured a tail rope as soon as she was tied off proceeds to go mental (withfixed gaff still in and me attached!!) after a couple of minutes or so clams down, still secure she was beat! With the shark secure we deided to do a couple more drifts of the bottom picked up a lone blue eye about 4kg and trolled toward home for 0's all in all it was a great day (picked up another flyer today). Back on land the mako went dead on 100kg and 8ft tip to tip, a new pb for me and the boat!

well done, scored a 100kg model today - what a rush!!

we had one going wild free jumping just behind our spread on sunday, looked to be a stripe bout 70kg

something like the spheros in smaller sizes could be up your alley, good reels and very reasonably priced

we use small 4ltr buckets with lids for storing snapper leads, and just stow them out of the way till you need them. simple but does the job for us

we have been fishing browns for good blue eye and gemmies plenty around especially gemmies when the weather is ok

been looking for a new jigging reel (never done it before). has anyone had any experience with the saragosa 14000 or the new okuma v series 80?? also had a look at the spheros with drag upgrade on what i have seen in previous posts? any prefrence/experiences from the raiders out there????

we were getting 19.6 at browns some of the blue eye

went out to browns this morning in search of a fish or two. Picked up at 6am, put the boat in and headed for browns. approx 10km out we set the lures and got the bottom rigs ready. not a touch on the lures, we arrive at our destination and send our two reels down (alvey reef kind and 12"). after a slight delay due to an over run on the reef king we reel in the first drops, wich resulted in 2 blue eye on the king and one on the 12", not a bad start we thought. we did the drift another 4 times with a mix of blue eye and gemfish. we lost one string of fish to a bolt of speed about half way up, shark????? anyway final tally for the day was 6 gemfish and 5 blue eye, biggest gemfish went 5kg and blue eye 15kg(gutted and gilled weight) had cubes on board but conditions wern't ideal so we pulled the pin, trolled 8km then gunned it in. home by 2

it's very common when fishing for threshers to hook them thru the tail, they use it to stun there prey, like a whip before they devour their food.

i fish primarily out of a 6m quintrex bluewater centre console, has proven to be a great boat. exposure is a big factor but if you can deal with gettin wet theyre great

that snapper is a beast! what did you get it on, livie? if you don't mind my asking, roughly what area were you fishing?

dont know what we were doing wrong, i went out late this morning, trolled then cubed for 2.5 hrs. were abut 2km east of browns and picked up 2 JUST legal dollies on pillies. trolled back past browns for 1 more dolly (just undersize) but none of the fin everyone else seems to be catching

belivev it or not the s/s soap actually works, some chef's use itto get rid of the strong onion/garlic smell on their hands. alternatley you can just rub your hands on the inside of the sink.

yea, a bullseye alright, they are nocturnal, so i think thats the reason for the larger eyes

hi daniel, i am only very new to this caper myself, but have had some sucess catching blue eye, gemmies, and ocean perch. we have been using an alvey 12 inch winch, spooled with 900 mts of 200lb braid, using a paternoster style rig with 3 droppers in 200lb mono with 12/0 circle hooks and pipes filled with lead for a sinker (about 2.5kg). we tie these on the bottom of the 200lb leader with lighter (40lb) line as a break away in case we hook the mountain. bait is usually fish flesh (slimey side or stripe tuna fillet cut in about 3 pcs. we have just upgraded to an 18 inch but are yet to use it, will let you know how we go! hope this helps grant
