have you tried an unwaited squid or chunk of squid with a small amount of lead? i have caught several in the harbour this way. the squid doesnt have to be freshly caught it can be frozen as long as it is in prime condition (nice and white, not pink).
I haven't tried bait for these fish but that could be the go once they get too shy. On thurs arv i did manage to hook one right down deep on a plastic after marking them up on the sounder but only one and then no more takers.... they are making us work for them now!

Very nice looking king there. To answer your question, I have seen you too fishing for kings near king schools that I have been working. I have used sluggos to hand made flies to slices. At times when they have been busting u[ everywhere ina diametre of 50 odd metres I too have found that nothing can tempt them. Normally this is later on the day I see this activity and it has been strange of late.
I am talking about lures that are one inch to 12 inches so I have tried all sizes to date.
One thing is that these schools are moving more ground this year and if your patient enough, you will find them.
Hope we can share our thoughts on this topic.

Hey squid boy,
Was out there again this arvo and experienced excatly the same thing..... hooked and boated one fish on arrival and then the school went right off the boil. It's not that they wern't feeding but just not with the same ferocity as before. I can understand fish being put down if you spook the hell out of them with the boat but i would have been more than 40 mtrs away today and lobbed a wind assisted cast into them after the hook up i motored the fish away with the electric so it wasn't in the thick of the school.
This makes me think that the school must sense a hooked fish somehow and it puts them right off the lure from then on...... just an idea but i've had a few sessions on these fish and when they first appeared on the surface early september it was possible to bag out on them. Now it seems a month or so later and having had a lot of fishos chasing them about they shut down once the first fish is hooked......... or maybe i'm just looking for excuses

Hi all,
Arrived home from work this arvo put some frozen kingy fillets out to thaw for dinner and sat down to do a little work on the laptop.
About an hour later i went out on the balcony and saw gulls going absolutly bannanas out on the harbour. There were soo many way more than i've seen before and below them loads of big splashes! This was a bit to much to let happen without getting involved and with a couple of hours sunlight left ( gotta love daylight savings) i ran down to get the boat sorted.
Half an hour later i was in the thick of a huge school of kings and hooked up using a lightly weighted plastic there were soo many of them. After landing a nice fish i was on the hunt for another. For the next hour i followed the school around whenever they came up but i was buggered if i could interest another in any type of lure..... really frustrating.
Has anyone else noticed how boat and lure shy these kings have become lately?
Anyway at least i turned a frozen fish dinner into a fresh one. The thawed out fillets will have to be for work lunches now.

Getting the girlfriend interested in coming out in the rain was probably more challenging than convincing the fish to play!
The lure was a 4'' berkley power minnow. I find these to be a great all rounder alot of fish take an interest in them where i fish they are easy to cast and keep in contact with while retrieving.
Lets hope this summer continues to deliver the goods!

You really seem to have these lease flatties sorted out in an environment where they are very easily spooked!
I remember snorkelling around some leases a few years back in your neck of the woods and being amazed by the size and numbers of flatties lying in ambush in less than a metre of water.
Them being there and actually catching them don't neccessarily go hand in hand though, so Well Done.

Hi All,
Decided to brave the rain this morning to have a go at that mid morning high tide today.
With this warm water flooding into the harbour I chose to try a few spots close by the ramp that fished pretty well when the water was warmer at the start of the year. Over winter these spots had produced nothing so I was interested to see what difference the temperature would make.
I arrived at the spot started lobbing plastics into all the likely looking spots and began to get instant results on some nice little flatties. I noticed they had a lot more energy than they have had in the past few months.
The action continued on like this right up till the top of the tide when i felt a very light take and set the hook into a fish that felt a fair bit heavier than those leading up to it. Big head shakes followed and then a great big run which I chased down with the electric. As this fish slowed down and I scored some line back I was thinking this fight was very unlike even a big flattie, it was one I didn’t recognize at all.
With a few more lunges and a bit more winding I finally caught sight of that colour every fisho wants to see at sometime in their lives.......my first ever jewfish!
Backing the drag off and playing it up to the boat my girlfriend slipped the net under it and brought it aboard.
They really are an impressive fish in the flesh and after admiring it in a few photos I put it back over the side and it took off straight for the hole it came from.
If I could learn how to do that consistently I would be one happy bloke.

Looks like this spring water is getting the flatties a little excited and i'm looking forward to that.
Those flounder love a plastic don't they and hang on right to the end.

Hi all,
Well it was a beautiful day today and I was able to get out and into the thick of things on the Harbour this morning. I'd been watching alot of surface action on the water every morning this week so needless to say my expectations for this weekend have been high and fortunately today didn't disappoint.
Heading out from the ramp this morning it seemed every corner I rounded had fish busting up all over and having arranged to pick up my girlfriend from a designated spot I was forced to carry on past these fish busting the surface not an easy thing to do but I had dragged her out of bed pretty early with the promise of fish!
Luckily this turned out to be a forfillable promise and we were soon into some very respectable kings taking worm plastics as they fed on the surface. I opened the account with this fella.
And very soon after my girlfriend is onto her very first king! She was really pleased and couldn't believe just how hard they pull (having only caught flatties and bream in the past).
As the sun got high these fish seemed to spend less time on the surface and we started to pick them up on small metals fished mid water.We also got some tailor at this depth which the kings were trying their best to swallow all the way to the boat... great to watch.
What top day on the water hope others were able to get out there.
