  1. Hi Luderick Angler

The lake fishing was really tough going as the lake had dropped below the weed beds, which totally wiped out the mudeye hatches, along with this the water temp was 24, way too hot for trout, we decided to fish well into the early hours , but only managed to catch a few trout which had been gorgeing on yabbies. 11 anglers in the party managed to catch about 15 trout over 7 days

The rivers were much better especially the Gungarlin which was chock full of little rainbows all willing to take dries, managed 8 and lost about 20 in 2 pools, didnt need to fish pool aftyer pool as the fish werent shy at all,

The thredbo was tougher mainly due to the amount of angling traffic it gets , only managed a small brown in the rapids between the bridge and Paddy's corner

Hopefully next year will be a better outing

    Steve

  3. Hello fish raiders

Just got back from a fantastic fishing weekemd with fellow Central Coast Fly rodders

fishing TCD and the local rivers

Arrived mid afternoon at TCD to try and get the evening rise and managed a nice 35-40 cm fish in the margins on a red holgraphic

diawl bach nymph, after a great fight and some arial acrobatics i managed to net him, take a quick photo for the memories and back

he went to fight another day, the fish was in excellent condition, fin perfect and nice and chunky.

Bang on 7pm the evening rise started but the fish were not in a massive feeding state as they were very selective and just

sipping the odd black gnat off the surface, by 7.30 all was over.

Saturday i was taken to nice spot on the fish river with 2 mates, on the drive in we could see fish rising all over every pool,

we couldn't tackle up quick enough, the first run we came to had fish rising so after 3 casts i had a cracking little "bow"

on the bank, i love catching these feisty little rainbows, then the rain came down steadily for the next 2 hours which

put paid to any more excitment, eventually though persistance paid off as i managed another 6 fish in the next stretch of river

the best going 45cm's and a cracking brown it was too, big and fat and a great fight on a 4 weight.

Travelled back up to Tommos to fish the afternoon with the rest of the guys from the club but didn'tmange to touch a single fish

between the lot of us, the "pond" on the left just before the dam was fishing well with plenty of fish rising consistantly

( in hindsight we should have stayed there.... oh well you live and learn

Sunday we hit a diferent stretch of the fish river and this fished so differently from the day before, same weather

conditions vbut hardly a single rise, but still managed a nice fat browny on a tiny dry

All in all it was a great time on the water and can't wait to get back there again soon

PS There were plenty of brown and black snakes on the water so be careful

  4. Its a Trophy Water all ready.......

I do remember reading something about the Triploids and why they aren't stocked in most Aus Wates. There are a couple of smaller impoundments in Tassie that are stocked (or were) stocked with them but I don't ever recall reading about how they fared? The Salmond Ponds outside of Hobart has quite a few in the holding pens, very powerful looking fish.

They are stocked a lot in UK (where surprisingly they are referred to as 'stockies' :biggrin2:) and to be honest they look very 'sloppy'. By that I mean they never appear to be in good condition often looking stunted? The other thing I believe is that they are somewhat susceptible to disease, in fact now I mention it that could be the reason they aren't stocked. They might threaten the wild populations in much the same as escaped Salmon from the farms are viewed as a potential disease threat. Remember, Aus and NZ have almost the last pure, disease free strains of Brown and Rainbows in the world (I think!).

    cheers

    Hi Matt

What i meant by trophy water is catching overwintered fish that reach the magic 10lb,( not sure what TCD record is )

also stockies that have tail and fin damage is all to do with overstocking in the stew ponds, this also leads to disease through infection, as triploids( sterile fish) are better at being disease resistant, These crappy looking stockies are usually from the smaller trout fisheries, I can vouch from personal experience that Stocks Fishery and Rutland water in the Uk have a stocking policy second to none with fish that are fin perfect and very very fit

  5. 99% of stocked fish in the UK are indeed triploids, these will not attempt to spawn and actually overwinter better due to constant urges to feed and not breed,

basically they continue to grow all year round, if TCD was stocked with triploids im sure it would indeed be a trophy water within a few years

  6. Hi fellow raiders just wanting to know where i can get my hands

on weed flys for blackfish...im having trouble sourceing string weed

and thought why not try to get them on flys.

Has anyone done this sort of thing before any suggestions of flys

or where to get some string weed in sydney would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

    jerad

Hi Outfisher, weed flies work a treat. we use them on the central coast fly rodders outings off the rocks for drummer, the material is called "ice yarn"

    Heres a link from Roberta

    http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=33297

Just make sure you tie them on strong hooks, sportfish sell them tied by a fellow member Paul McGrath

    Hope this help

    Steve

  7. Fished all day last Saturday , only saw one kingy caught between 9 boats, but we did have 4 seals for company which took the only one i hooked, very slow for the last 2 weeks mate , dont know who's saying its been going off, but that could easily change :1fishing1:

  8. Well done Bunney!!

I've only hooked one on fly once... while trying to catch Luderick on a 7wt... it was a big one and cost me a fly line when it went straight back to the reef and shredded about 10' of a Cortland 444. :1badmood:

    Cheers, Slinky

Hi Slinky, i broke 2 of my favorite 7 wts last year on salmon and tailor so i beefed up and took no chances today as i was using a 10 wt, this time last year Paul McGrath landed a monster at nearly 4kg's, I didnt facy my chances on a 7wt this time, but great fun trying to pull them out of the rocks, there was plenty showing today, just nice to catch a new species on fly. Bad news on the 444, a very expensive bust off mate, the thought brings tears to my eyes and of course the wallet,

    Tight lines mate

  9. Hey Man,

Well done, they go hard on fly don't they!. I have only managed a few on weed flies, but no Pigs yet- I'm scared to!.

Great pics, and keep the fly stuff coming

    Matt

Cheers Nanook, yeah they pull pretty hard on the fly gear, just cant give them any slack or they're off to fight another day, great fun though

  10. Went for a fish today with the guys from Central coast fly rodders club up to Wybung head to target Drummer, managed to catch my first blackfish on a bread fly

Other members did exceptionally well on a weed fly( Ivan nailed about 6 ) but got dusted on 4 of them

A great day out , pity the swell was up, will deffo be back soon :1fishing1:

  11. Yeehaa what a fish for the young fella, that would have just about sealed his fate as a fisho, he's hooked for life now Dad..

    Congrats on your kings..

Cheers Ray, he did me proud pulling that thing up from 100mtrs and not one complaint, just pure determination to land his first Kingy :1fishing1:

  12. congrats to your young bloke. He will probably drive you crazy wanting to go every weekend now!

I wonder who is prouder dad or son?

    pete.

Ha ha Pete He already does thats why we took him, but its a nice feeling to have a son whos into his fishing as much as his dad, my boy would fish all day in a puddle if i let him, i feel proud everytime i see his big smile when he lands a fish

  13. well done,

some nice kingys there and good one for his first, i had to catch like 20 rats before i got a decent one and how did the new diawa go, i've seen a lot of people using them lately.

    cheers,

    Pawn Star

    Hi Prawn star,

the new Diawa was awesome, super smooth and effortless drag, it was a toss up between the Saltist but decided on the Seagate, great reel and stacks of power, just want to test it on the bigger hoods, looking forward to matching it up to my new V Fox 573 which looks a very nice rod/reel combo

  14. I get a call from my mate Jeff on Saturday asking if we wanted to take the kids out to the perch grounds off Terrigal, i was desperate to try the new reel ( Daiwa Seagate 4500)

So in double quick time we on the ramp and ready for some jigging( i'd stocked up on more jigs seeing as i lost a dozen to the

    pesky jackets the previous week)

The water was flat as and in no time we were on the fish, luckily only lost 2 jigs to the jackets when suddenly im on so over the rod goes to my 8 yr old who played it like a pro

Wish i had've videod the grin he had on his face, would've put a cheshire cat to shame, the pic says it all

Had an awesome day, not loads of kings but just happy to have another "jigger" in the making

  16. the best spot in cronulla would have to be the sailing club/ferry wharf before they installed lights when i first squided there i was over on the sailing clubs wharf 6 cast i had 5 large 20-30cm squids shortly after they installed lights on the ferry wharf and now it gets packed with people and we have been harrased by police twice there so we no longer go there u can try a little down the channel theres a life rescue place there with a wharf and a orange light u can pick up squid most nights and its not uncommon to see whopper port hacking squid there lurking the shallows but again it does get packed and its only a small wharf another wharf to squid is just down the road wallys wharf squid off the left of the wharf towards the closest moored boat let the jig sink to near the bottom u will catch alot of squid here but its a well known spot so be early or miss out on a spot as this also gets packed

Thanks for the top info Gazza very much appreciated mate ,

    Tight lines buddy

    Steve
