  1. I catch mullet on a very light rod and light tackle... I love how they fight for their size, occasionally doing some acrobatics. Well my setup aint exactly light... size 2000 reel with 10lb fireline... rod is 6'6. I just uni-uni knot to some light leader line, attach 3 hooks on them, add a floaty... the length should be up to 50cm from the lowest hook to the float. Buy the smallest hooks possibly, I use size 12 hooks, and bend the hook to increase the gap. Because the mullet's mouth is so small, they have trouble swallowing the entire hook, you just have to hope they bite that point of the hook. I make my own bread dough for bait, simply mix flour with water, add some salt, sugar and butter to it. Look up some bread making recipes. If you are lazy just get some slices of bread, and a small amount of water and make a dough out of it, add some butter or tuna oil to keep it together. As for berley, I throw out some very small pieces of bread, I prefer throwing out just the bread crusts. Make sure they float so you can see the boil-up. Now a little trick to get them interested in your bait is, cast beyond the schooling fish and reel in fast over them,(A white float is useful for this and they will chase your float). As soon as you are above the school let it sink, you will get hooked up if they like your bait. One last thing, they feed only during daytime.
  2. Anyone know what fish this could be? Was fishing around Lugarno and netted it up for fun. It's currently in my fish tank. It's just over 10cm in length. I feed it peeled prawns and bread, but I have never caught one a hook before. One thing I noticed when I feed it.... it NEVER eats off the bottom, as soon as the food hits the bottom it ignores it. It looks like a good size for livebait. It might be some sort of herring, but its definitely not the same as the ones people catch to use as livebait here. I've caught those before as well. They're plentiful around here atm.

    Dead Poddies

10cm-15cm poddy mullets... I scale it, then cut a small opening in the gut. Put the hook from the middle of the gills from the bottom and expose the hook point where the incision was made in the gut. Thread some line/string in the mullets eye and secure tie around the hook. That should hold it together. I don't know if this is a good way of presenting the bait, because I haven't had any success with it, but it lasts much longer than a fillet. A lot of the time it's left untouched for hours. Occasionally may have some pretty big pulls on the bait, but no hook up yet. Reel in only a head and spine remaining. Might have more luck with ganged hooks on it though. I've caught bream on mullet fillet but most of the time it gets eaten by pickers often. Never thought about flipping the flesh inside-out. Going to give it a go next time.
  4. I've fished underneath that train bridge before with no luck at all, even with fresh bait. My guess is under the bridge is quite shallow, and there's plenty of snags around there too. I don't know much else about fishing East Hills, I just never liked that area. East Hills is a park, so they've removed lots of rocks and I've heard that they've dredged a bit of it and added sand. So a lot of natural hiding spots were destroyed. I think most catches in that area fishes which swim up and down stream during tidal flows. All I know right now is, in the Georges River up-stream, around this time bream aren't as active, maybe wait until September or October and try.
