  1. G'day Raiders, Been a while since my last visit here! Went fishing around Lion Island last Saturday and lost sand anchor. Being new at boating, I knew I should not have dropped anchor knowing there would be reef/rocks below .... Was wondering what anchor I should be looking around to buy best for my 4.25m tinne? The one I had was a pretty basic standard sand anchor. Not sure if there is a better anchor that those using normal 4.25m tinnies like mine? Hope to hear some ideas from you. Regards! PS - only caught a 45cm tailor and around 1.3m gummy shark (thrown back of course)
  2. Geez!!!! A piranha-like plague as ravenous swarms of leatherjackets eat all they can see
  3. ha ha ha, thanks guys. Just found out width of gunnel has to be under 30mm for Troll Rod Holder to fit. Bugger, ours is just over 30mm at 35mm approx. Will have to keep looking around and get more ideas. Thanks again for your replies!
  4. Thanks guys! Can't wait for the next trip soon, need the practice to get into a routine. As for the TV, we couldn't believe our eyes it was floating by ... 80cm box TV, Sony if you must know. Very disappointing to see it in the water floating where it should not belong but we cannot get over the fact it was floating where it should be sinking given the weight? We just don't get that! Next report to put up with photos for sure when we go out next time
  5. Thanks for your help on motor Chris. It was def worth it after that weekend of grief! Great day we had on the water but so much I need to learn more .... knot type for anchor, riggings, etc. The more I go out, the more I will pick things up hopefully.
  6. Hi all, First report from Sunday 2/5/10 at Brisbane Waters. Sorry if its late. 6.45am me and two deaf mates leave Woy Woy ramp. First stop we head to near the Rip Bridge. A couple of good bites and bang .... mate caught 30cm whiting. An hour later we decide to check out the mouth of Brisbane Water (Ettalong Channel) and went around the point offshore to fish. A few nibbles and a 25cm snapper that went straight back in water. A lot of boats around but after an hour we don't see anyone catching anything (or ourselves) so we decided to try around the mouth at channel (Ettalong). We decide to fish in the shallows, other mate catches a 55cm flatty. 1/2 an hour later an 80cm TV floats by I kid you not!!!!!!!! ..... a few mins later I see this rope drifting off, WT!!!! it was my boat anchor rope. I take off my sunnies, hat, shirt and about to dive in til mate says relax ... the rope won't sink, its floating. Start the motor and drive there to retrieve rope he says Felt pretty stupid but a pretty funny moment that was. In case you were wondering, I was not the one that tied the rope upon anchoring! Mate denies it was his fault and reckons rope was tampered with LOL ha ha We decide to try one more spot that was suggested. Upon arriving, 5 seconds later bang ... a 65cm flatty caught from mate. 10 mins later a crab (10cms) and another 10 mins later another crab (10cms). All in all, not a bad 1/2 day effort for 3 of us new at boating and fishing for 3 deaf guys that does not really know about knowing where to fish and the correct rigging/bait .... gotta say that ain't too bad for the days catches. Felt pretty confident on the boat and can't wait to go out again in a few weeks time.
  7. Hi all, I'm looking into buying one or two rodholder for our 4.2 tinnnie and came across this supposedly good product. It is a 'Troll Fishing Rod Holder' made by Boathoist. I like the idea that it is made of powder coated aluminium which bots to the side of tinnie not needing any holes to drill and just use the bolts as clamps. http://www.boathoist.com.au/boathoist_rod_holders.php#troll Has anyone got any experience or used this product or what they think of this? Or is there anything better out there worth looking into (no plastic)? Hope to hear your views or comments on this product that I think seems pretty good. Cheers!
  8. Excellent dunc333 - just what I was looking for! The tool kit I need to know what other boat owners bring with them. @mrsswordfisherman - NSW martime information checklist didn't have what I was after. I should have been more clearer on my question. Thanks for for that. And thanks Kiwi and Ozbrett! Have a great weekend!
  9. Thanks for your replies. "spare plugs, short length fuel hose, bolt cutters, fuses" and "hot water in thermos" are the suggestions I was hoping to find out. "basic tool kit" ... what kind of tool kit should I be looking at having on the boat as the must have? (that was more of what I am after - I should have asked the question properly) Sorry for not asking the question correctly. "What kind of tool kit as a must have on boat"?
  10. Hi all, Being new with boats, what are the 'must have' tools to have on the boat? Any ideas would be great so I'm better prepared on boat in case something goes wrong one day!
  11. Hey Stewy, I am starting to think that it is best to take it in for full service. I will speak to my father and get back to ya. Does this mean I have to leave my boat there for a few days or it can be picked up later on in the day? Cheers
  12. Thanks mate, I will try this .... I didn't think about that. You mentioned about its not a big job to change the impellor, can a newbie like me do this? I just want to learn the simple things about the motor and do myself if it is not a big job. Thanks
  13. Interesting when you say this Mick. Had no idea about this regardless of the hours you do. Thanks for that.
  14. Thanks mate. Looks like I will have to do that. Is it expensive for this kind of repair job?
  15. Thanks David ... yeah motor ran for less than 1 minute before turning off after seeing no stream of water coming through. Will give it ago with paperclip or cordline whipper snipper and see if it clears the hole.
  16. Hi all, When I thought the motor was fixed, it appears that I now have another problem .... the flushing (pee stream) is not coming out. Any ideas what I might need to do to fix this problem? When I accidentally put the red on (-), a little spark appeared. A few guys were helpful here in helping me with the problem that turned out to be a broken fuse. New fuse replaced until I could not start the motor, chrisg was kind enough to take a look at the motor and it was the starter which is now fixed (a massive thanks chrisg!) Upon getting home I ran the motor (thank god it works!) but no pee stream coming out ....... It is a 2005/06 Yamaha 40hp 2 stroke - only less than 13 hours used. Should I consider using drum/flush bags from now on instead of the muffs I used before? I read somewhere that I try using a cordline from whipper snipper to push in hole to loosen the salt build up .... not sure if I should do this? Any help or suggestions on fixing the flushing (pee stream) to work would be great. Fishraider is a great place to post a question I'm having problems with .... great work guys.
  17. Many thanks for all your help in this and a massive thanks to Chris who took an hour of his free time yesterday to have a look at the problem. Turned out to be the starter. He even gave me a couple of simple tips/pointers that will go a long way in safe boating and motor. Thanks Chris you are a top bloke, I appreciate it very much (thank god it was easy to lipread u!) I def will be running the motor (if not used) every 7-12 days from now on instead of every 2-4 months. Now I'm facing another problem which is the flush water is not coming out of the motor. I have no idea why it was the fuse, then the starter and now flush water. Motor has only seen less than 13 hours on water - and it is very strange to have all those 3 problems at once. Maybe I should flush it in drum/flash bag instead of muffs? I will put up another post in Boating and hopefully will get more ideas/suggestions to fix the flushing problem.
  18. That would be fantastic, it would help a lot. So I can learn a few important things from someone who knows about boats. I've never been taught about boats and its hard to get a better understanding reading about it in black and white. Watching goes a long way learning. What time suits you? Thanks so much C!
  19. Hi Stewy, Good to hear from you. Yep, just sandpapered the post on battery and the terminal ...... still does not work. Checked battery again and yep it is fully charged. It is becoming very frustrating that I will have to take it in to get the boat people to have a look ..... And perhaps sell it later on .... I don't know. Thanks anyway. Do you have any link to a website for people that are new with boats to get more information about maintaining boats etc? I cannot find anything and I don't have a clue what I"m supposed to do most of the time. I think I feel like giving up and sell the boat ... Very happy that a few guys here pointed me to the right direction which ended up being a broken fuse. A great place in Fishraider to work out what the problem might be.
  20. Many thanks for your help in this. Took cowling off and followed as per instructions from manual and yep it was a broken fuse. Replaced it with new fuse. Tilt up and down is working ..... Tried to start the motor but nothing. Just clicking sounds ... Any idea what this means? (battery is still full)
  21. Thanks Bisso. Cowling is as in motor hardtop cover? Sorry, its a new word I'm learning If so, will check it first thing tomorrow morning and fingers crossed its a fuse
  22. Thanks muchly. So I follow the red (+) from battery to the motor? (is that what starter mean?) Problem is I can't find any fuse or what fuse looks like? Do I have to open the boat cover to find the fuse? Or the fuse is just outside the kill switch on controls? and its in plastic see through? Sorry to sound dumb because I have no idea about boating electricals and very new at this
  23. Hey C, Bateau Bay mate ... Even without starting it without key, the tilting buttons does not work too. Throttle box with red cord attached ... are you talking about in the motor or its near the key switch just outside it? Sorry to ask you as I'm quite new at this because I spent all morning yesterday looking for the kill switch!
  24. Hi C, Turn key and nothing happens. Not even a noise or clicking sound. Its a 2005 Stessco boat with 40hp 2 stroke Merucy motor (bought new at time with 2005 boat).
  25. Hi all, I am new with boating. I might sound stupid .... Having problems trying to start our boat. The last time we used it was 6 weeks ago to start motor for a couple of minutes like we do every two months if we don't use boat. Last weekend, for some reason I put the black on (+) when putting battery in boat and there was a tiny spark. Don't ask how that happened! What does this mean if I did that? Anyway, I recharged the battery and it is full. Boat still won't start yesterday morning when we planned to go out fishing. Had the battery tested from mate on some small fan and it was working fine and his jump start showed the battery is fully charged. Tried to jump start but still nothing. It has to be electrical right? I'm new at all this and I think there is something small that needs to be looked at to fix the problem. Any ideas would help me a lot and save $$$ from taking it to service for something small that can be fixed. Please help
