[Ray And Hutcho Darwin Fishing Adventure]

Sounds like a good trip Ray with a pretty busy time on the fishing front and a lot of fun was had by all ....If you and Hutcho are interested in going to Darwin again next year, Cungee George went up there with his mate Larry aka Occy a couple of weeks ago and has relatives and contacts in the Greek community in Darwin and was only talking recently about getting a group together and going back again sometime around the beginning of winter next year...

Everytime I drive over Alford's Point Bridge at night during the week the area is completely deserted and looks very very fish looking to me..

[New Changes To Wearing A Life Jacket Or Pfd]

Thanks SwampyWolf for posting the new requirements that require the compulsory wearing of life jacket/s under certain circumstances.. Proper notification to all and sundry of rules and regulations in fishing and boating or updates and changes to same for that matter has always been a problem as not everybody owns or uses a computer...

In my opinion these changes are are a step in the right direction, long overdue and are the result of a decision made by sensible people who acted on past statistics in the interests of saving lives on the water...

I think the future design of life jackets would eventually amount to the production of a much more comfortable life jacket for those boaties who elect to wear a life jacket at all times.. The problem with inflatable life jackets at this stage seems to be reliabilty as to whether they are going to inflate or not for whatever the reason when it really counts...

[Success On The Georges River 8-06-10]

Top Georges session Bassmaster & son incorporated with style The areas you have been covering have got big jew written all over them especially back from the moored boats opposite the restaurant at Lugarno a run in tide job, and also the around the channel inside the figure eight at the moons... from my own expererience in the upper Georges in regards to doing a day session on the jew you only need to wait for a miserable cloudy morning that comes in as a change for the worse to be in there with a chance particularly if you happen drop a moving bait right into a jew hole.. still that doesn't seem to apply during the day time at CC Bridge with the run out tide jew for some reason but it can happen in the middle of the day from the start of the run out tide at places like Wanda but the daytime results seemed to happen during those lousy weather days when nobody would want to be out there anyway...

Good luck on the jew when you go down there next time and by the way basscatcher send me a pm if you like and I'll give you a couple of spots that would be worthwhile dropping a livie or a lure down into in the daytime to see if there's anyone home or not

Thanks mate... yes getting the hang of it. I now need to learn some of the magic fish finding skills Bubba has... cause at the end of the day he put me on them. So a big thanks to Dan for (competition aside) an absolutely mind blowing couple of bream sessions. We lost count of how many fish we landed at around 50...

[Salmon Off The Beach Anyone?]

Well anyone who knows me knows I pretty much hate bait but every now and then...well I took my 2 youngest down to South Maroubra with a bag of smelly old pillies and had a ball.

Light line, nothing to get "bricked" on and a hard fighting fish that likes to jump! Just the ticket to get kids into sports fishing!

Hi still learning good effort on the salmon at Maroubra.. I believe schools of good size tailor have been running into Lurline Bay with the run tide in the early mornings.. you can get into Lurline Bay from Marine Parade South Coogee...

As to resizing photos, if you have outlook express you can email the photos to yourself and, when the pop up comes up tick the box that says make my pictures smaller, and then save the resized photos back into the "my pictures" section or wherever they came from in your computer...

[Need Advice Please]

I'm new to fishing and sorry if this question sounds silly.

I have a 6-10kg Silstar Crystal-tip rod equipped with a Okuma Vecta VT-55 reel. I bought this set-up for lures & plastics to use off wharves, rocks, etc.. but I will now be using this as my boat rod. I will be fishing the harbour, sydney heads, botany bay. I will be fishing for kingys, snapper, salmon.I was thinking spooling half 20lb mono, half braid and leader at the end. I need advice on what pound braid I should put on my reel and does brand matter?

Jake I have a couple of 6-10 kilo Silstar Chrystal tip rods myself which I must say I like very much.. I prefer to use the Silstars every trip now as sporty lightweight rods for my big Alveys i.e. I use them on a large spool 651 Alvey and a 725 non casting Alvey and run 40lb mono on both reels. I use my largest baits on the Silstars and prefer light weight spinning rods for landbased fishing on either 80lb braid and in some cases I use 30lb braid attached to a 100ft of mono top shot line in flouro carbon...I like to run fluoro carbon from the water level down and allow 100ft to cover the deepwater jewfish spots in the Hawkesbury ...

Most of my 7' jewfish rods are ugly stik rods either 10-50lb Tiger rods or 15-30lb Bigwater rods which all carry model numbers that indicate they were made in the U.S. for the American market and are virtually not avaliable over here due to the cost of airfreight because of the length requirements of the main carrier U.S.P.S - I.E. United States Postal Service... The high cost of airfreight thru Fedex led me to buying the Silstar crystal blue rods on the recommendation of a rod maker rather than buying the equivalent in ugly stik rods that are available over here having been made for the Asia- Pacific market...

Jake, if I was in your position and had an Octuma 55 vecta reel which is a good match for the Silstar in that the Silstar has good sensitivity capabilties in the 6 kilo head of the rod and the 10 kilo section above the butt end and, because of the design giving the rod enormous overall backbone in the butt itself for the rods sensitivity ...

I would rig up a Silstar 6-10 kilo / Okuma V55 combo as follows.....

Starting from the hook/s upwqards

I would use 3 or 4 metres of 30lb or 40lb actual leader material at the least..and as cant catch any said when you're running braid in the equation you can use 40lb for the main line but in this case you would have monofilament in front of the braid which would make the braid an intermediate "back up mainline" in that monofilament fluorcarbon line material could be used from the water level down and, in this particular case where the braid would be joined to mono in the mid section of the working line, a swivel would not be required, nor would a swivel be required at the fluoro leader material end ie. the fluorocarbon leader that goes to the hook/s ...

This particularly knot courtesy of Slinky Malinky can be used to tie on your top shot flurocarbon line material to your braid and also your fluoro leader material (As opposed to the relatively inexpensive fluoro carbon line material which you can use for top shotting (in the manner desribed) and for wind on leaders etc tied directly to your braid..

Finally you could back up your braid by spooling on say 10 metres of 50lb mono to cover your breaking strain at the spool end of the line... for tying the mono to your spool, simply use a unit knot.. but, in the case of a spinning reel, tie a half hitch at each side of the knot to re- inforce the spool knot in case it ever happens that you get taken right down to the knot..

Good effort on the sp's Bassboy What a good part of the upper Georges to live in, that area is a natural thoroughfare for schools of fish moving up and down the river and feeding along the way ..keep up your studies mate. You'll learn lots from your Dad, and the more you fish in a particular spot the more you'll be able work out the best tide times and then you'll be able to just slip down for an hour or two whenever you get the chance....

[Bream And Blades Go Hand In Hand]

Good effort on the bream Stewy to save all the searching and reading different opinions on the best performers, I reckon it would be a good idea if you did an article recommending your five best performing lures for each one of the species from freshwater spinner baits to saltwater swim or jig type lures for fishing deep water in places such as in the Hawkesbury when need be, and keep updating and adding to your own preferences as technology warrants.. you've got me and my friends more interested in working all types of lures on the other side of the boat during our jewfish sessions and in saying that it would be good to be able to go out and buy proven performers and keep in step with technology by referring back to the article for updates from time to time..

[Another Pb Smashed Last Night- 47Cm Bream]

That's a stonker of a bream at 47cms wannabefisho good effort hanging in there in the freezing cold ... bream schools of that size in the Lane Cove river especially at this time of the year speaks volumes for fishing in Sydney at the moment.. I've seen schools of big bream corner the stragglers in a bull mullet school and tear them apart up in less than a foot of water at the top of a big tide under a road culvert at the back of Ballina and considering the bullet mullet were around 40 cms it was all over in the twinkling of an eye..

[Wanting To Catch My First Jew Fish]

Hi Joco I might be able to arrange to have a Hawkesbury jewfish session from 7am till dark with Geoff aka Geoff on Fishraider and that will hopefully be within the next few weeks or so before I go in for the first of my proposed hip operations....

If the tide tops in the early morning, the session may also involve some kingfish and flathead fishing before we settle in to fishing for jewfish and the associated bi catch for the remainder of the morning run out tide and then we'll be able to fish the afternoon into the early evening part of the run in tide which normally would give us another chance or two around sundown.....

Keep contact by PM if you like Joco but the session will have to be arranged for a day to suit as the leg pains associated with my hip joint problems are more of a day to day proposition at the moment... I will eventually be able to get around to fishing with my other friends on Fishraider and generally prefer having three people fishing in my boat and I prefer fishing for jew with a fairly decent rod spread....

Tony it's a plyer tightened single overhand knot that's used as a stopper for the braid wraps, do me a favour and have another cast and let me know if it still sound like a machine gun happy birthday hic got the birthday boy hic ups now lol

edit tell you what Tones that slim beauty knot doesn't seem to be a bad knot at all and should go thru the rod guides smoothly with the mono tag out of the way and especially when you have a good look at the strength of the doubled line blood knot in the braid and the evenness in the wraps in the finished product as shown in the video below

Nice little Pittwater session John...tailor of that size at this time of winter certainly speaks well for the standard of fishing that we can expect for the rest of the winter...I think the season has moved around a cog and, although the breeding size bream schools appear to be staying on, it seems the breeding size jewfish might be late coming in....

[Question On Leaders.]

Hi Two Blues Slinky mentions the possibility of the braid line cutting into the mono under pressure which is quite undesirable in a line to line knot where braid and mono is involved...

If you're inclined to want to fish with longer leader line and particularly in a fast current so that the bait will flutter off by itself by being more independent of the sinker, take a look at this particular knot which is hard to find and was originally a knot that was used for tying cord line to very heavy nylon leader..You'll see that the wraps of the braid are even and the end result is in the form of a barrel knot and..... because of the simple overhand stopper at the end of loose end of the mono, the group of braid loops will pull into the overhead knot itself which would have enough give in it anyway to prevent the wraps cutting into the leader line as they're being pulled in against the ooverhead stopper knot...

Let me know what you think of this particular knot for tying braid to heavy leader as it goes thru rod guides fairly easily and it would be a handy knot to use especially should you decide to fish all fluro in front of your braid from the water level down...

Also Tony what do you think of this particular knot and also the easiness of tying it..
