  1. Headed out yesterday to chase some of those big kings out at the peak i have been reading about, loaded up with livies, got out to fad and peak about 9 with us and one other boat out, love fishing weekdays. nothing showing on sounder and drifted from one to the other, clear skys, flat seas, no fish, had quick chat with other boat who had already landed one beakie in area and decided to head up to 12 mile to see what was around, ran a spread with a couple of lures for dollies and a couple of christmas tree on riggers to pick up a few bonnies for fun, oops, on about our 5th bonnie half way there we got sprung, a big stripee jumps on bonnie and we are on, mind you should have had something bigger out than the old penn 330 with 8 on it and would have been great if we had had a harness. stripee comes up and its the biggest i have seen in a long time, guessing close to 120kg, spent the next hour and a half running rings around it trying to get line, everytime we got it within 20feet of the boat off it would go. Getting close to 2hrs and he dives deep again this time he is not coming back, decided to try locking him up so thumb on the reel and bang, hes gone. There was only two of us on board, missed some great shots on the camera while trying to round him up but if anyone finds him with the 16cm christmas tree stuck on his beak let me know, love to get it back.

awesome stuff mate! and will keep an eye out for that christmas tree ;-)

  2. A good day offshore!

Yakked out quickly on Fri night for a super early Saturday session (sick of being runner-up to the marks, and after last time ...., arrived to find cowboys doing doughnuts around the FAD (on a 'Boab' Hire boat - hopefully won't see it again) a sleep-in wasn't worth the risk.

Water is iridescent blue a mile east of the heads. The currents are in close and have Marlin written all over them. It seems the fish are from the mile beyond. After targeting Dollies with livies, Pillies and skirts for a few bubbus we decided to troll some heavier gear North for a few miles inside the shelf, trying for something descent.

Nudda.., but a fish would of only been a bonus (in conditions as good as those). Is there anything better than feeling like the only boat on the Ocean, a cool seabreeze, sun shining and next to know swell! Thanks Ben for a top day out once again.

    Tight lines, Brett

Nice one Brett, And you're always welcome mate. Even though my first dollie was a baby it was still awesome to see their amazing colours and even tho it was a small dollie you can see from the photo and they way that I'm holding it, he had alot to say when pulled out of the water. hopefully next time we'll get something more substantial, a couple of Bulls would be right on the cards.!

  3. Left BAFA Sunday morning headed out to our squid spot, within 1 Hr we had 25 on board, most were good size Squid. With the bait tank full headed off to the Peak, weather PERFECT, tried the FAD nothing, continued on, trolled skirts, nothing, seen a few stripys free jumping. Arrived at the Peak and checked the bottom with sounder.Picked up some Arches, went back up current, did a double drop, hit bottom pulled up a bit, minuite later, thump we were on, both rods,20 minutes later I managed to land a 15 Kg Hoodlum, measuring 115cms and the old man after 40min finaly manages to land an 18.5 Kilo monster. (I should have had a Heart starter on board for him but he settled for a beer instead) he could not fish for the rest of the day. We both ended up with 12 fish ranging between 70-115cm in total, 4 were kept post-10446-089563400 1298271608_thumb.jpgand we both now have our PBs for Kingies to date.

Guys quick question how far out is the peak?

  5. Hey Raiders,

Well after being overseas for the last month and reading about how great Sydney has been fishing lately I finally managed to get out with a mate to chase some kings.

We hit the water early and stocked up with a few Squid and some Yakkas. Its amazing how accurate squid can be even in the dark.

Not happy with its new body piercing the same squid went out on the downrigger.

Fishing in tight to structure the plan was to drive the boat directly out to sea should we hook up. After rehearsing this on a few rat kings taking Yakkas, the live squid got absolutely MONSTERED!!!!

We both Knew this was a massive fish and after it stripped a heap of line off the reel we manage to turn its head and guide it out to sea using the boat to keep its head up. Once we were in some deeper water and not having to deal with the back wash from the cliffs I got into a comfortable position to put some hurt back on the fish.

After gaining and then losing line over and over for about 15 – 20 minutes I was starting pray the hook up and knots would remain solid. Finally this big bruiser was guided into the net. My mate did an amazing job controlling the boat during the battle and this fish was 100% a team effort to land.

The fish went 106cm and is a new Sydney PB for me. I cant wait for the next big Hoodlum… there are definitely some massive kings around at the moment.

    tight lines,

    Sam

    CRACKING KINGIE MATE!!!!

  6. All charters will take you jigging as long as they are fully booked in order to make it worthwhile. Big boats are best so that a few people can jig at once.

Saltwater Charters are who I used. I don't think that you'll be able to make a booking with them until next year... Groups of Japanese have begun to arrive to use them here out. Other charters are 'Mills' and 'Ultimate'.

A group of Japanese went out today using all of the best gear on the market and again not one Sambo landed, and over 100 jigs lost (we stopped at 45).

What a battla!! No Fish but you managed to catch a bloke on board your own boat....classic. Well mate this really does prove the mainar curse! haha Just kidding mate. It sounds like you had an absolute cracker of a time and great report by the way, you must have been gutted you didnt pull one of those monsters aboard, well there always next time i guess. Give me a buzz when you get back, i'm keen to head out and target the infamous harbour kings again. Talk to you soon bud.

  7. 2 big Squid in the Harbour... was a shocking morning with strong Southerly blowing and only a few boats in the popular spots. The Kingies are not on the bite at all. We tried in several places throughout Middle Harbour and near structure in the main Harbour. The water is much warmer in the main Harbour than it is in Middle Harbour. The head off the biggest Squid produced enough fresh bait to last us for the whole day and we took home a good feed of Calamari as well. The Kings are there but things need to be right for them.

Dont worry mate, we'll get them next time! i'm very keen to go out again. May have to wear a poncho as one of my favourite jumpers got inked by the squid, oh well, its was worth it for catching my first squid, what a beauty!

    ONYOURWAAY!

  8. i have a Garmin FF140 i need to get rid off cause i upgraded. used for 1yr but good as new.

make me an offer if you like

thanks for the feedback guys i really appreciate it. Caine thanks for the offer but i'm going to go for a brand newie, so i know what its been through, plus half the excitement is unwrapping, just like an early xmas prezzie.

I have a separate hand help gps but i think it might be an idea to go with a sounder that has gps built in.

    Thanks again guys.

    Ben

  9. Hey guys,

I was wondering if someone could help me choose a new fish finder/sounder. At the moment i'm running a battling old school 300 series hummingbird which is giving me the Sugar Honey Iced Tea'S and has no doubt hindered my efforts to reel in that big kingie. I have a mate that runs a lowrance finder which was apparently quite cheap and does a very good job. looking to spend a little more this time around approx $350 - $400. Would of course love to spend less but i'd like to get a quality finder that will have a good life span and of course find me some top fishing spots.

    :mad3:

Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.

    cheers

    Ben
