  1. G'day,

Headed down to the Eucumbene for the closing weekend in the hope of catching a few trout. Have recently taken up the fly and am loving it so far. Top weekend had by all and seemed despite the crowds everyone was catching fish ( and putting them back by and large), long story short I managed this fella on a nymph under an indicator in one of the deeper pools. Was 66cm and over 8lb.post-8401-0-07460000-1371026909_thumb.jpg

  2. I have a 2 speed shimano talica, use it mostly for kings and yes basically never use the low gear. The reel itself is beautiful and I like to know that if one day I come across the opportunity to chase marlin or tuna then having the two speed would be a big help. If you can afford it then there's no reason not to get a 2 speed talica or saltiga

  3. Look the main point of my post was to say form your own opinion about this, the etec mentioned may not have been a 70 exactly but was in that vicinity and was loud and that's a fact. I was under the impression the point of this site was to allow members to put forward their own opinions ( not expert opinions but an view formed from talking to etec owners as well as other outboard owners who despite not being marine mechanics know how much juice their engine is using, how much they spend on servicing and how their motor compares in performance to previous motors they have owned). If people are gonna get slammed for putting forward their own opinions and offering caution in believing clever marketing, then I won't bother posting in future.

And the post about PW regardless of who let who go, my point was that not that long ago according to him etecs were amazing and now suddenly suzis are the business showing that in reality his word means nothing.

  4. The new yammy 70hp was marketed as being very light for a four stroke in that hp range (would have to check website for actual specs) I reckon that would be a goer for your boat. Careful with etecs, I was next to a charter operator the other day chasing a school of salmon and the noise his 70 etec was making at a speed just above idle was unbelievable. Couldn't believe it as all etec ads bang on about how quiet they are. I'm no expert but it seems to me the only people who rate etecs are those sponsored by them, ie those paid by evinrude to market them. You only have to look at Paul Worsteling who spent years crapping on about how unbelievably good his etec was only to suddenly change to Suzuki to see that just because people say something's a good product doesn't mean it actually is. Like I said I'm no expert but when you are making your decision speak to everyday owners of different motors rather than look to well known fishos who are undoubtedly sponsored by outboard brands and flog them accordingly.

Ps I own a yammy 115 4 stroke and like it

But also know a couple of Suzuki owners who love theirs as well

They would get my two votes, as well as possibly a Honda

Edit, just checked the Yamaha website and saw their 70 4stroke weighs 120kg so possibly too heavy

But the point remains the same, don't get sucked in by marketing spin, chat to different boat owners and form your own opinion

  5. Hi raiders.

On the weekend my trailer bearings collapsed and caused pretty serious damage to my trailer. As a temporary solution I have our boat tied up to a rowing shed which I have access to. However the mechanic just rang to say he can't get the parts for the trailer until Jan 14. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for what I could do with my boat until jan 14 as I have no trailer for the moment? Am trying to avoid paying an arm and a leg so anyone's suggestions will be welcome.

    Cheers

  6. My dad has been fishing lake eucumbene for 30 years, generally he 'll fish with old glass rods and mono and catch plenty of fish. Recently I lent him my 1-2kg nitro vapour and 1000 Stradic with 4lb braid. When using this combo he caught an 8lb brown trolling, the biggest fish he'd caught in years. The expensive rod and reel certainly didn't help him hook the fish trolling, but the overwhelming theme of the story when he was recounting the fight was how amazing it was that he could feel every kick, head shake and movement and how much fun it was reeling this fish in on such a lightweight, sensitive yet strong outfit. Moral of the story is that using his old glass rods and mono line would have caught the fish, but using the new gear gave him a far greater appreciation of the fight and the sporting aspect of fishing.

That's why I like buying good gear, doesn't catch more fish but I have more fun using it.

  7. Hi raiders,

just ordered a 54lb Jarvis Marine SWAD for my bass hunter boat. I'm really confused as to what battery to buy, the specs for the motor says it draws 40 amps (I assume this is going at max speed)and I would hope to have around 2-3 hrs of running use. So what type of battery should I be looking at to run this thing?

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Thanks for the reply mate. Interesting but from what I've read customer service from JW has mostly been better than MK. Dunno what to make of it but appreciate the reply, will have to review the finances but def leaning towards the jarvis walker ATM.

  9. Hi raiders, just wondering if anyone has anyone experience with the Jarvis Marine SWRT bow mount motor? The reason I ask is I am keen to buy it due to the fact it comes with a remote control and a foot pedal where it seems everything in the minn Kota range is twice the price? Just wondering if anyone could offer opinions on these motors. I'm aware the Minn Kota are probably better but they are really out of my price range ATM. So if anyone knows anything about these Jarvis marine motors would love to hear any feedback before I go and buy one.

    Cheers

  10. I'd go a heavier shimano terez over the king mack spin. 8-12kg is alright but doesn't hurt to go heavy when targeting kings, some thing in the 80-100lb range would knock over most fish without too much trouble. Price is around the same possibly a little over 250.

  11. cheap online braid tends to pretty nasty stuff, if your just starting out with braid and this stuff turns out crap you might be turned right off braid altogether. Stick to the reputable brands and you shouldn't have any problem, power pro is the best value for money in my opinion and Nitlon is even better if you want to pay a little extra.

  12. the spinfisher and 30-50lb braid is good value for money, get a heavier rod though i reckon. Silstar powertips are probably your best bet for a reasonable priced boat rod in the 10-15kg area. That would be my pick for your budget and target species.
