  1. Hi Dave, we trolled outside the heads to Bondi couple of weeks back, Bonnies everywhere, big ones too, then headed over to longy and got some good Kings also, so there's plenty of fish around for sure. Hope you get a good catch.

  2. Hi guys,

Is it ok to take your boat into darling harbour? Is it ok to pick up and drop off passengers in one of those wharves they have?

I'd say so mate, been in there a million times with my boat, just don't pull up at the taxi wharf, I think thats private. Maybe some of the bream fishing guys can help, I see them having their weigh ins there.

    Cheers

  3. Marty, how'd you go dude? what did you end up getting? I'm currently on the first leg of a round the world fishing trip, I've brought with me two Saltist 6500, one with 50lb braid and the other with 80lb braid, both top shotted with 100lb double twist mono. A Hots One pitch slider 24kg jig rod and a shimano t-curve GT special 8ft popping rod, reckon this is the perfect travel combo, also looking for Doggies and GT's just like you. In Bali at them mo, shitty water but heading to the Gili's soon, fingers crossed for the pair of us, stay in touch and lets compare notes.

  4. The Rapala rods are so sensitive to mis use its not funny, the structure is so parabolic that if you put pressure on it other than from the tip they just snap, even some of the very expensive japanese rods are the same. Angler rods are made with PC blanks which are great, surprised you managed to snap it, but if you pull line away from the tip at the wrong angle thats what happens. My mate broke my brand new T-curve 24kg marlin rod by snapping the end off by bending the tip of it. They're all designed to spread the pressure throughout the length of the rod, goodluck with taking it back, but I think they'll pretty much know straight away.

  5. If you've got a nice reel like a Stella why would you buy an average rod? If you do hook a decent fish, your going to be spewing you didn't spend the coin on a nice rod. I bought a Rapala Braid concept pro, and snapped it, crap rod, then bought an Avaya popping/jigging rod, great for popping but too long for serious jigging, now I have a Hots One Pitch Slider, incredible rod, weighs nothing, very very thin, well balanced and strong enough to pull a 90kg Dogtooth in. Upto you mate, I'd match your rod to your reel, you know you want to anyway really.

    cheers, Tobe

  6. Hi Marty,

Sounds like a nice set-up your going to have, couple of things you might want to take in to consideration though. Firstly when trolling for Marlin, your strike does need to be quite high otherwise you won't set the hook, a Marlins beak is very tough to set the hook in. I don't know of any of the boys in my club SGFC that use braid to troll with. The other thing, if you use 130lb braid, there isn't much out there that you won't be able to skull drag in, we do alot of jigging with braid and have all downsized our braids from 80lb to 50lb and even lower for more capacity, its very tough stuff to break if get quality brands. Anyway, this is just in my humble opinion, I'm sure fellow Raiders will help you out some more. Goodluck and I hope you have an amazing trip.

  7. Jigging is a an awesome way to catch Tuna, they've been doing it in Indo for years, especially for Dogtooth, there's heaps of clips on Youtube. We always drop jigs at a few spots on the way out to Browns/ Canyons etc etc, basically the bigger the jig you use the bigger the fish that hits it. Use long knife jigs in shallower water and the heavier shorter jigs out deeper otherwise your jig will catch the current too much and have a huge belly in the line, not what you want for jigging. I just got a new Hots One Pitch Slider and I'm frothing to get out amongst them. Goodluck with the Lucanis, apparently the green and gold is the one producing the goods (Kings/Snapper).

  8. Nice mako guys well done, just wondering what some of you guys think or the best way to quickly ( if there is a quickly )dispatch makos when you have tired them on the rod, we sunk the fly gaff into one on sat & he managed to chew the rope so we struggled to tail tie him but eventualy did, then dragged him behind the boat for a while, at one stage we had him beside the boat & i thought if only we had a good club, rite between the eyes would have been the way to go.

Im no expert so was just wondering what some of you more experienced guys do to kill the buggers if your taking them for eating as the one we got was about 120kgs & real good eating i must say, i think ill be looking for a good solid mallet or baseball bat to keep on the boat now :1yikes:

Tail tieing it and dragging it is the best method I reckon, clubbing something that size is hard and dangerous to do, I put a knife through it head, that calmed it down no end, but remember, when you think its dead, its probably not, and you don't want a Mako of any size coming round inside your boat, its bloody frightening. Goodluck.

  9. Hi Raiders, haven't posted for awhile. basically haven't had time to get out much. Left Rosebay at 8am and headed for 12 Mile to try and jig up some Kings, about 5 boats already there and a fair bit of current running making us use 300g plus jigs. Hard work with those buggers on, had a couple of hits and landed a nice Barracouta around 2ft long, perfect bait for what we were really after, Mako's. Interestingly only lost one Jig, good news as the jackets weren't there. Moved off to Browns trolling along the way for zero's. We were listening to the skeds of the Botony Bay comp that was running, and noticed everyone that was hooking up, was down south, everyone at Browns had zero's. Still we hadn't gone that far not to give it a go, so threw two baits over the side, one Bonito on a Tiagra 50/ 24kg T Curve and my Barracouta on my virgin TLD 50/ 24 Bluewater Ugly Stik. We cubed for three hours for nothing, kept hearing the same from all the other boats around us, we were drifting towards Sydney anyway, so we just stuck at it. Jamie's rod went off with a nice run, got him harnessed up and pulled the other rod half way in. After a few minutes it spat the bait, totally mauled the lttle tuna though. So I let my bait out again, balloon set above my double and 12ft of trace so about 20ft away from the bait. Within minutes it got hit, but very slowly. I let the fish swim with it for about 100ft, then struck as hard as i could nearly falling over in the process. Nothing.......it just kept swimming as if nothing had happened..what the??? set the drag to sunset and hit it again...nothing, just kept swimming real slow, then dropped the bait. Wound it back in to check the bait, and got hit by another shark we hadn't seen, hit that...nothing. Starting to wonder if I had a hook on my line at all. Let it out again, and got hit again, then Jamie's rod went off on the other side again oo-er!! his was alot closer in so I let mine just cruise off with my bait. Jamie had abit of a fight but lost it, starting to believe our luck had ran out. Beside us about 300m away was a 28 Bertram drifting also, which was getting dangerously close to my fish, so levered up the drag and set the hook on my fish which was bloody miles away by this point. It just kept going, full sunset and just ticking along, jesus! Never seen a 24kg rod bend that hard without something giving way. Clicked into high gear on the TLD and wound it back inch by inch, after about 30 mins came up along side the boat, but still deep, we had colour but couldn't get the size of it. Jamie had the gaff ready, but I said there was no way this thing was ready. Took one look at the boat and went for the abyss, nearly pulled me over the side, which i didn't fancy as we had several Mako's out the back in the slick.

After another 40 mins we had him topside, this was just the beginning of the foreboding mission ahead, Jeff got on the trace and Jamie on the gaff, I knew this shark was going to go nuts, they always do, sure enough it snapped the gaff in half, so we were just left with a wee little tinny special, believe it or not thats how we got in the boat, 140kg Mako with a toothpick. Had a couple of high fives and headed for home. Jeff was stepping around the Mako, which I said probably shouldn't do that, sure enough we hit a decent wave and the bugger sprang to life, scaring the bejesus out of us, never seen three fully grown men run so fast around a small boat.

All up an amazing day out on the water, fantastic fish and incredibly impressed with my Ugly Stik, use them for Marlin, and definately going to get more. Hope my pics come out alright, check out the girth of this fish, and the snapped gaff.

    Cheers, Tobe

  10. I decided to fill my fuel tank right up, which i havent done before. The next thing i knew there was fuel spilling out the bung holes. My first thought was that i had filled up the rod holders , but on further investigation i realised the fuel had come out of the breather hose which runs to the back of the boat. Is this where the breather hose normally goes ? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Depends what boat you've got mate, a freind of mine has a trailcraft which has the fuel breather out the back of the boat under the handrail, so I'd say yes it probably is meant to come out there.

  11. First things first mate, be bloody careful going out to Browns in a 5.7m tinnie, the weather can change within 10mins out there. Your 25TLD will handle most of the fin your going to catch out there, but I would keep your 50lb braid and topshot with 100m of mono to your leader. 15kg rod is perfect for Yellowfin unless your chasing the big mama's. Are you cubing or trolling, makes a big difference to your rig?

  12. nice work nice kings good work for sticking to the fishing even when spewing

but word of warning be careful with those rods they have a tendency to snap

i would go very easy on the drag

im sure if netic sees this post he might comment on the rod

Mate I snapped my supposed 24kg Braid concept on a 5kg King last year, not the best investment I ever made, have since moved to a 24kg Avaya jig rod, which has laned everything since. Great King though dude, just don't put too much pressure on the rod.

  13. I lived opposite the bondi murk, and fished it on a regular basis. On one occasion myself and two friends went night fishing on a full moon with a 2m building swell. We were watching the bommie for whitewater and thats how we could judge the size of the wave coming. We had a petrol generator and flood lights rigged into the rocks, still we missed an incoming wave that took the generator and all our fishing gear, that was with three experienced fishos. We all got away lightly, but still a very close call. But to go rock fishing on your own in a building swell......THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE EVER......DON'T FISH ALONE, if this guy had someone with him, an alert could be made, an attempt to save him, anything. But if your on your own, well thats the way it will end. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but how many lives do we need to sacrifice before it happens again, the worse thing is, it will. I live for my fishing, hell its the only reason i go to work. But please someone get the message out there that rockfishing IS the most dangerous sport in the world, its a fact.

  14. Now I've looked closer it looks like tar. Some oysters posts are painted with a tar paint for protection. I've got the residue off but the remainder seems like a deep stain in the gel coat.

Out of interest I tried a marine extra cut compound in an inconspicuous spot, Good job I did cos now I have a heavily scratched matt finish spot that I cannot get a gloss on regardless of what I do. Tub says it will produce a high gloss finish. Just used small circular motion by hand..what went wrong?

Hey mate, give sugar soap a go, gets all the nasty stuff off the side of my Bertie where the bilge pumps out, can't be any worse than that stuff.

  15. Hey mate you haven't mentioned it, but i would go with an Ugly Stick Black Tiger, 7ft 10-50lb. I've caught big Kings and Reds on this but its still soft enough to flick SP's for Bream and flathead, if I remember rightly I got mine for $150, would highly reccomend them.

  16. Went out yesterday at 4.30 chasing tailor and maybe a few rats anyway find the birds working at cast metal slugs and after about 2 hours i was thinking of calling it quits because of the change coming in.

I had caught stacks of tailor already so as i was packing up i noticed a sailing boat had tipped over, i went over to see if everything was alright and they said that they would like a tow to the nearest dolphin. I got one of their ropes and started to pull the boat in, it was difficult with my 2 stroke 15 horse and the wind anyway as we tie them to the dolphin we tried pulling them over no use. A fellow fisherman in a very nice 540 Stacer and a big 60 horse also had a try but also didn't do to much. In the end the water police had to be called

No one was hurt in this and everyone got home safely, the boat wasn't flipped over and as far as i know it is still tied to a dolphin.

And this is actually youngfish, posted accidentally on a mates account

Good on you for helping out dude, the more people like you on the water the better place it will be for everyone, always good to see fellow boaties helping each other out.

  17. We were fishing pilchard fillets unweighted, didn't hook anything for hours until the bait rod started getting smashed, so we changed line down to 10lb from 15lb and we got hits straight away, finicky fish those reds, well worth the hassle though.

    Cheers, Tobe

  18. Hey Raiders, went out for a snapper sesh at longy and had an awesome day pulling reds on slab baits. The water is looking good and producing fish just about everywhere, off to 12 mile next as I heard the leatherjackets have moved on finally.

  19. I don't think its a squid, they normally take bites out the back of the head which paralyzes/kills the prey instantly, and they take several bites in quick succession to immolbilse it. You would see a sharp crescent shape bite if it were a squid, the fact that its only been sliced but the meat is still there would suggest a fish of some sort. My guess would be snapper as I heard of some whoppers being caught the last few days, in fact 5 upto 10kg, I'm waiting to see the pictures tomorrow before I believe it though.

    Cheers, Tobe
