  1. Yeah mate, 4" Pogy's are my plastic of choice.

What size and weight head do you guys use on the 6" grubs?

The handle is an aftermarket "Bassart" carbon fiber job. Beautiful to use and the handle will spin for a good 20 sec, excellent engineering. Been on the hunt for a few more for my other ones but very hard to get, 12 months so far and nothing.....

    G

Yer i can imagine they would be in high demand and limited quantity...i use the stock standard 3/8 ounce and 5/0 size nitro jigheads.

  2. Nice fish there Greg....those reel handles look soooo good! Are you using pogys? I was also out with my dad on Wednesday for a last trip before he goes to China for a month(dont know how im going to survive without going fishing for that long!), we ended up with four the biggest was jus shy of 3kg, they were all taken on 6inch grubs

  3. Hi Alex

Bite wise no I don't think so but the Branzino braid I'm using in 30lb is thinner than the 20lb Sensor and feels like the 15lb version. Bloody amazing stuff but rediculously expensive!

It's really finding a balance but as I said earlier, the smokings every trip start to wear thin after a while. The Toad outfit is my go to outfit atm, I do run 2 others, a Branzino 2500 size on a branzino rod loaded with 20lb and a Branzino 3000 on a UFM boron running 25lb.

The Miller I had built after using them on the Barra dams and couldn't belive how fast they knock over those big barras and still cast plastics on worm hooks to the largest of slick rigs, a very versatile rod with plenty of balls. It's only very new but knocked over a nice 4kg model on MOnday with ez.

Have you done or had much luck deeper out of the washes down that way or do you just target the washes?

It seems most of the reef is deeper along there compared to the north of the Harbour.

    Greg

Wow ive never heard of branzino braid sounds awesome tho!...might have to get my hands on some... Miller blanks have heaps of balls, sounds like it pulled out a really nice fish for you on Monday

The washes between the harbour and cape banks are mainly adjacent to deep water, and some of the headlands hold big fish. Last summer for instance i hooked a 70-80kg marlin on my certate and a white 7inch shad while fishing for snapper. Of course didn land the fish but had it on for 20+mins before the 20pd trace wore through. Snapper wise the northern beaches hold more fish, off the eastern suburbs drawing blanks on some sp trips happens somewhat often (well for me at least). Im sure there are some sp anglers who pull consistent results along the eastern suburbs. The eastern beaches does hold some shallower ground which has produced some fish but nothing spectacular. And areas where i thought they would be without doubt has not really produced.

  4. Thats a cracker Sydney snapper on light gear!

Use to fish light but smokings start to wear thin after a while.

My current outfit is a custom Beast Buster Toad fished over a Branzino 3000 loaded with either 25 or 30lb braid and min 20lb leader. Still get done every now and then but sad faces are less on the boat.....

    G

cheers mate.... have you found that the bites have decreased since you increased your braid strength?

Sounds like a nice sp combo your running there....im using as my main outfit a certate 3000 with a diawa tournament saltwater rod, have been smoked a hand full of times. The way i see it the 20pd fluorocarbon trace is more likely to snap than the 15pd fireline. I believe part of my success with not being dusted too often is that i dont put much pressure on the fish running light drag and try and ease them back to the boat before they wake up. When i was in NZ sp fishing for snapper the skipper told me to run light drag so as not to get dusted (didn really make sense at the time) but after a few really good fish it did. When running lighter drag, braid is alot more abrasive resistant and when in shallow water say less than 15m good fish will usually get the bottom regardless of what drag your using on a light to medium type outfit. The skipper in NZ even went to the extent of pulling out an 8pd outfit and boated a few reds over 6kg and got dusted only twice.

Though fishing like this does take the fun out of it sometimes especially if you like to high stick your fish and lean into them :tease:

    cheers

  5. Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah the fish was a real buzz to land. There was a hell of alot of casts for that fish as we worked all day for it. Targeting in and around the washes can be productive especially this time of the year as the cuttle fish spawn and the snapper come in close.

    hey chicka,

Apart from todays session had not been out for three weeks. Yu told me about your new purchase, sounds like a good boat too and by the sounds of it youve had some good sessions on it!

    cheers

  6. Went out today targeting snapper on plastics around the washes off the eastern suburbs. Amongst the hordes of barker and pike pulled out this beautiful fish which went 5.35kg on a 7inch gulp on 15lb main line and 20pd fluorocarbon trace. The fish was hooked right in amongst the washes and called it for a king at first.

  7. Got a call from a mate at 11.30am monday asking if I want to come out on his boat chasing tuna at browns [silly question],I said want time and he said 12.30pm so I raced home got my tiagra 50w and tackle and I was there. We left the boat ramp by 1.00pm to get some live bait, half an hour later we had enough so off we went with a 10 knot westerly behind us. 75 minutes later we were there and with a nice show on the sounder started bottom bouncing, first drop and up comes 3 gemmies :biggrin2: . Second drop and 1 nice blue eye hits the deck  , had 2 more drops but no luck so we decided to try our luck with the tuna.We started cubing at 3.40pm and the plan was to drift over browns by sunset which worked a treat, 40 minutes later and my tiagra 50w gets a hit and in comes the smallest albacore I had ever seen about 2 kg. There was talk on the radio from other boats hooking up to albys and fin so we were confident.10 minutes after the first alby my tiagra go's off again this time it's a 6kg alby from then on we got a hot bite of albacore from 5 to 8 kg range no yellow fin :yahoo: . As I was fighting another alby and had it close to the boat it just screamed off and I said bet a shark is chasing it  ,sure enough when I get it up there a mako trying to get it and he did but only it's tail. Next a 80lb wire trace went out to catch the mako but he bit threw it and he was gone.We kept on cubing but the albys had been scared off but in the next hour or so 2 or 3 more makos turned up but we only managed to catch a little one of about 60kg. Kept on cubing for another half an hour but with no luck, then made it back to the boat ramp at 9.20pm. All in all a great arvo session. Will download photos soon.

nice fish mate!, sounds like an action packed day!did the mako put on a good show?

  10. I haven't done any snapper trips along the eastern beaches yet. Doesn't sound to good from your reports but when I do I'll let you know. What depths are you targeting and what jighead/plastic combo are you using?

    Greg

Depth range off the eastern beaches is very similar to the northern- mainly between 15-25m...ive found that the reef off the island has no major pinnacles lke those off the northern beaches.....i use conventional snapper sp outfits....atm the main rod i use is a certate 3000 loaded with 12lb and a samuri 10-12lb rod....most of the time im using a 3/8th oz jighead with 5 inch jerk shads.....most of the snapper ive been getting out of the eastern beaches have been in close off the headlands

    cheers

  11. Hi Alex.

To all you guys that look at tides and moon phases when you go fishing, YOU GUYS ARE TO SPOILT!

Mate I go when ever I can get out.

I wish I had that much fishing time that I could go in "so called peak times" but I have only been able to get out 3 days in something like 10 weeks and all three have been half days.

That's one of the main reasons I bought the boat I got, just to get me out and back fast to maxumise my fishing time.

I have about 5 Sydney marks I hit so far. Each time I go out I just fish them in rotation till I find the fish. Hopefully I try hit one more spot per trip to try broarden my run.

I always have the sounder and plotter on while running out and back and try never to run the same lines and ALWAYS watch the sounder. Any little hump or drop that has bait on it I drop a mark on the plotter for further exploritory runs. Doing this I get to grid the bottom with my plotter, hunting anything intersting that might hold fish. Over time I should get some interesting information from it and every bit of info helps.

    G

    Hey greg,

Three times in 10 weeks i feel sorry for u  been trying to get out too but this weather is shit...dying to get out there and hit the reefs off the northern beaches...funny how the reefs off south sydney are not as productive as the northen beaches....even coogee's wedding cake...have had a few snapper sessions there for little returns and the ones we do get are little tackers...You ever had any luck south of the harbour?

    cheers

    alex

  12. just a little more info i fished from dead low tide and berlyed hard[alas the sharks]we were using frozen mullet and salmon for bait it was blowing 15 to 20 kn south easter and raining off and on

i always fish this spot for flattys in 10 meters off water

i even rigged a full mullet with a meter trace and was bitten off above the trace :1yikes:

this is the best catch numbers wise i have had at this spot [not very often i get a catch like this simmo]

the 3 times i got sharked were bigger flattys and i never saw the shark

    smallest flatty was 35cm

every time i got sharked it only put the fish off the bite for 10 minutes

all the fish had bugger all in there gut

it's not hard to work out were i was fishing but if you would like to know just send me a pm

all fish were cooked on the bbq by daughters boy friend in ally f,with garlic and soy and hunny and chilly

they were great the lad can certanly cook

    cherrs gary

nice catch mate....that doesnt really sound like sharks though- unless you felt additional weight on the line?...sounds more like you got jackets in your trail to me especiallly if they bit you above the trace

  13. You need to select "terrain" in the box on the bottom left, also helps if you turn on water surface under one of the top menus as well. Then you can scroll under the waters surface. Took me about 1/2 hour to figure it out!

yer but you cant get any info on bottom topography close in, it only works for the shelf and beyond
