There is negligible difference in weight, I think the 10000 has an aluminium rotor where the 8000 has a graphite one. Would the 8000 be better for lures and spinning metals considering it has a faster retrieve ratio? I think I'd be using it primarily for live baiting. Howdy brains trust, I'm hoping you could offer some advice, I've spent many hours researching a kingfish outfit for the boat and need a bit of extra help. I'll be using the rod on a boat, live baiting, trolling using a poor man's downrigger, tossing lures and SPs and perhaps giving jigging a go but that's not a priority. I will mostly be fishing inside Botany Bay and the Harbour and sometimes out the heads if weather permits. I've currently got a 7' Samaki Zing 12-25lb with a 13cm broken tip which I'm hoping to fix, it's matched with a Sustain 6000FG 13kg drag which I'm thinking of loading up with 30lb Daiwa J Braid Grand. I think I'll use this as my lightish kingy rig. Now I'm looking to step up medium-heavy rig, and have been looking at these 4 rods: Daiwa Demon Blood 6'4" - 2-4 PE Daiwa Demon Blood 7' - 3-5 PE Daiwa Saltist Hyper 6'4" - 2-4 PE Daiwa Saltist Hyper 7' 3-4 PE I assume the 7' rods will be better for tossing lures, 6'4“ for jigging, I'm gravitating towards the 7' Demon Blood. Is there much difference between the Saltist Hyper and the Demon Blood? In terms of reel, I've been looking at the 6000, 8000 or 10000 Saragosa. I feel the 10000 might be overkill and way to heavy for any lengthy session, the 6000 looks better weight wise at 455g but only has 10kg drag. The 8000 has 15kg drag, but weighs 555g. What would you all recommend, I don't want to go overboard and fish too heavy on the kingies and I am happy to lose some of the bigger models in lieu of having more hook ups with a lighter set up. What braid and leaders would you recommend for the medium heavy outfit? Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers, Victor

Howdy all, I just got back from a 6 month stint in Europe and finally got to wet a line and commence my endeavour to learn the dark arts! Headed down to Coogee beach with a basic idea on how to catch blackfish! After rigging up and spending a rather frustrating hour attempting to figure out how to use a side cast reel, I finally started getting some downs and after a few misses managed to bag my first blackfish. I was absolutely stoked, and within a few minutes I managed to catch some sort of rock fish and then another blackfish and then decided to call it a day! On the back of this success, I headed down yesterday for a cheeky quick post work fish and managed to catch a stonker fish of 42cm on my first cast! I must admit that I am now thoroughly addicted and counting down the hours before I can head out again! If anyone can offer any basic tips please feel free to post them!

No problem! For bream, snapper etc: Take some 1/32 jigheads and gulp sand worms. Walk out onto the sand bar and cast into the depths, let the soft plastic sink then slightly twitch the rod tip to impart only a little bit of action on the worm and wait 5-10 seconds and rinse and repeat, you should feel the fish bite then you can just strike (not to hard). For Flathead: 1/8 jigheads, nuclear chicken 3" minnows, cast into the depths wait for it to sink. Keep your rod horizontal then sharply lift your rod to about 60 degrees then lower the rod tip and take in the slack line and wait for 5-30 seconds, next time you go to lift the SP you might feel a weight which is a flathead so you'll set the hook. I find flatheads are a pest in this area, seem to hook them every time I cast out lol Any soft plastics will work, I have used these 2 with most success in this area - Don't be afraid to try new ones, the prawns work very well too! The thing with soft plastics is building self confidence, I spent a solid few weeks before I caught my first fish but once you know you can catch them, the fish just jump on to the hook! When I get back from overseas I'll give you a bell and we can go for a fish

Hey buddy, I'll share with you my secret spot at Rose Bay where I learnt to fish soft plastics and I can promise you that you will catch fish! I used to fish here regularly and have caught Bream, snapper, flathead, flounder, salmon, whiting, tailor and trevally! There is a sandbar and it backs onto some deep water, basically when the tide is running out all the fish hide in the deep waiting for baitfish to emerge from the shallows and on the flip side when the tide is coming in it the baitfish move to shallow waters. I work for a disability organisation and often take one of clients here, he had never used soft plastics and I promised him he would catch fish and he did, it's super easy. I recommend purchasing some 1/32 jigheads and I find that gulp sand worms work best here, cut them in half so you get double the amount (the fish don't mind), Anyway let me know how you go P.S - Most of the fish are small, but like I said it's the perfect place to learn, specifically if you want hone your skills for targeting particular fish. Also be wary, there are stingrays in the shallows and numbrays I warned a guy and he thought I was joking, about 30 seconds later I saw him plummet into the water with his rod (the numb ray got him) If I was in Sydney I would offer to take you out and show you the basics, but I'm living in Switzerland at the moment! I'll be back August and really looking forward to wetting a line so if your still keen, we can go then!!

Fill a few ice cream containers with water and freeze them, pop them into the bottom of the esky and chuck a bag of ice on top! Lasts much longer

Thanks everyone for the assistance, especially Royce! I purchased everything today and the rod is a Snyder Crusoe Island 4136 11'6" =) All that is left to do is to learn how to catch them! I was thinking of trying to fish at Clovelly as I always can see people fishing there in the morning. Does anyone have any spots that they are willing to share for someone new to rock fishing ? Howdy again, sorry to resurrect an old thread! I am looking to replace the Samaki 7ft 12-25 for a longer rod for spinning and live baiting off the rocks and wharfs for kingies. Ultimately I would like a light rod to match with my Sustain 6000 FG and it needs to be a 2 piece rod. What sort of length should I be looking at 9ft / 10ft ? I have a price range of around $150 - $200 max and I've had my eye on the Samaki Zing Surf 10'6" but think that it might be too long and possibly to heavy for spinning. Wooooah thanks a million Jet and Luderick for all the help, time to start saving hahaha The Lox Iridium Surf looks epic and perfect for my needs, especially if you get a rod tube! I've almost destroyed my rods a few times whilst attempting to navigate the rocks! I'll definitely get the danjo wax in the 12lb as I will be float fishing, everyone seems to be recommending it! I already have a spool of 6 and 8lb vanish flurocarbon which I'll use for the leader =) Good luck in your competition Jet, I look forward to reading the fishing report =)

Perfect thanks luderick! I would like catch other species but I think primarily it will be used for luderick, could it be used for other species or should I get a different rod ? I am located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney (Coogee) do you have any idea which shops stock them? I can't seem to find any information regarding specifications or prices online. Does it come in a two piece set ? I was thinking of loading it up with Dango Wax 12lb and 8lb vanish fluro leader, does that sound ok ? Thanks in advance, Victor

I'm looking to do some fishing off the rocks and I am hoping to target kingfish (with live bait), Salmon and Luderick and have been looking at the Samaki Zing Surf 10'6 or the 12ft, 12-25lb. I have a Sustain FG 6000 and an Alvey 475B Luderick Special which I intend to use as the reels. Would either of these rods are suitable or would I need a separate rod for Luderick ? Cheers, Victor

Ahh now you've all got me worried, I still haven't purchased my reel! Would it make a difference if I got the 5000 sustain? Or should I be looking for another reel with more drag? Roughly what size jew or kingie could it handle if I had a 4000 sustain? Cheers, Victor

Its a stunning rod Now I just need my reel, which will either be a Sustain 4000FG or the Rarenium 4000FA, can't decide between them Anyway what sort of braid should I be running on this set up, 20lb? If so can anyone suggest good brands Cheers for all the advice!

Fantastic advice guys I've now narrowed my search down to: Samaki – VAMP SV-702SXH – 7’0 - 6-12kg Samaki – Zing SZG 702SXH – 7’0 - 6-12kg Pflueger Trion - PFLT-SP722H – 7’2 – 6-10kg They are the 3 that i'm most drawn to! The trions about $100, which is a super attractive price! Not sure whether its worth dishing out a little more for zing or vamp. As for reels, I think i'll stick with the Rarenium 4000. It has 2 spools which makes it very versatile I'll spool one with either 20-30lb braid, the other with 10lb which I can use for flattys or some lighter fish! Now I need to sort out braid, I use berkley fireline on my other rig but suspect I should probably buy something better if I'm hoping to hook some larger fish, what would you suggest ? Also I fish very light with my other rig (1/32 with gulp worms) but have no idea what I should use for this new rig ? Any suggestions Thanks again! Cheers, Victorski!

Howdy everyone, I've been having dreams of hooking some larger fish this summer! Currently I have a Pflueger Trion Tournament 2-5kg Spin paired with a 2500 stradic c14, I have been using it for the last year and its faultless I fish land based usually in the eastern suburbs and hoping to hook some kingies/jews and other big fish So far i've narrowed my search to: Reels - Daiwa Freams - 4000 - Shimano Stradic c14 - 4000 - Shimano Rarenium c14 - 4000 I really love my stradic c14 and thought I might upgrade to the rarenium! Rods Daiwa Spellbinder 228cm 5-9kg Pfleuger Trion 7' 6-10kg Samaki rods? Shimano Raider 2 5-10kg Shimano T-Curve As for rods I need a 2 piece and I have absolutely no idea what sort of weight rating I'll need. Not looking to spend to much on a rod but just looking for best bang for buck! Also need some advice on what braid/leaders and what sort of plastics/baits/jighead sizes are appropriate for this sort of set up Any help will be greatly appreciated Cheers, Victor

Howdy everyone, I've got a holiday booked at the Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse keepers cottage this coming weekend and was hoping to wet a line after being out of commission for a while are there any good spots around, preferably walking distance? Just under the lighthouse is sawtooth rocks which look quite promising! I'll be fishing soft plastics does anyone have any recommendations as to what size jighead and SP's i should invest in ? i was lucky enough to buy a stradic ci4 2500 for $150 aud from america, powerful little reel got it paired with a Pflueger Trion Tournament 7'2" 2-5kg and its amazingly light and can handle upto around 7kgs of drag but as david said its all about the balance, i was looking to get the stradic 2500Fi and even tested its balance on my rod, but i couldn't resist the price for the ci4! I don't think the differences are masssive, the only thing i noticed was the weight! ci4 was 196g and 2500Fi 270g! Cheers Victor!
