Hi all mate caught this in the Hawkesbury about 12 mths ago, thought you might be interested to see it.

Hi mate,

Good to finally see the pics. I'd call it for either an Australian Handfish - Brachionichthys sp (although, they only grow to 8cm) or some species of Anglerfish - I think this is much more likely. Possibly a Striped Anglerfish Antennarius striatus.

Hi flattieman sorry for delay had to get them off next door neighbour and when i install my scanner it deletes settings fo my digiatal camera..lol, Well is a old scanner!

Ahh... OK. I'm not sure what that is - it's used as a template for the general shape of the Anglerfish family. At least we've pinpointed that it's part of the anglerfish family. Below is a list of pics of anglerfish. Which one do you think looks most like the one you caught?

At first I thought it was a Fortescue...

nasty little buggers they are too, but I agree with Flattieman now that it is some sort of Angler fish...probably that 2nd one in the pic.

Probably a good idea with the pliers too, don't think I'd like to handle either of 'em...they sure look menacing.

OK. Number 2 is the Sargassum Anglerfish (Histrio histrio), but I reackon it'd be a rare catch in that location and at that size. I guess it was 'cause nobody here has caught one! :1prop:
