Flattieman
Hi mate, Good to finally see the pics. I'd call it for either an Australian Handfish - Brachionichthys sp (although, they only grow to 8cm) or some species of Anglerfish - I think this is much more likely. Possibly a Striped Anglerfish Antennarius striatus. Flattieman. Edited August 4, 2006 by Flattieman
harold
thats the first thing i have seen that is uglier than my ex---it is a close call though!

Flattieman
Um no, i think its the first one on your orignal link http://www.amol.org.au/collection/hostedwe...y/couplet47.htm Ahh... OK. I'm not sure what that is - it's used as a template for the general shape of the Anglerfish family. At least we've pinpointed that it's part of the anglerfish family. Below is a list of pics of anglerfish. Which one do you think looks most like the one you caught? Flattieman.

mrmoshe
Flattie im thinking number two pic will check with my mate, next door Chreers twoducks At first I thought it was a Fortescue... http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/fishfact.../caustrales.jpg nasty little buggers they are too, but I agree with Flattieman now that it is some sort of Angler fish...probably that 2nd one in the pic. Probably a good idea with the pliers too, don't think I'd like to handle either of 'em...they sure look menacing. Pete.
Flattieman
Flattie im thinking number two pic will check with my mate, next door Chreers twoducks OK. Number 2 is the Sargassum Anglerfish (Histrio histrio), but I reackon it'd be a rare catch in that location and at that size. I guess it was 'cause nobody here has caught one! Flattieman.
