The week leading up to the new moon from now until march.

Same for down here as well. But with most of the lagoons in Sydney being closed to the ocean atm you have to get in early before they all get taken.

Cheers,

Grant.

Prawns run leading up or just after the dark phase of the moon cycle (no moon). They usually rise out of from under the sand/weed/mud were they are living and run toward the mouth of river or lake on the run out tide.

You will ofter see a few at other times but this is when the are thickest.

Contrary to common belief the moon has nothing to do with prawn runs. Prawns run when the tidal range is the least. As tides are affected by sun and moon, the period of least tidal range is around the new moon i.e the dark.

Any decent tide chart will give you the moons. If you are planning to go to the entrance be there about 2 hrs before the predicted low tide. The water won't run before that and you may need to fight for a spot leading up to Christmas. I spoke to a guy tonight who got 2.5 kg in 2hrs on the last dark.
