Narrabeen Lake 20/2

Ventured down to Narra Lake again today to have a fish in the main channel, hoping for a feed of flatties and whiting. Pumped about a dozen nippers to begin with and got a supply of my old faithful whitebait.

Walked out from the southern side to the main channel where there was a tinny anchored up right on the dropoff. said g'day to the bloke in the boat and it turned out to be another Raider..Charmo..small world eh?

Charmo already had a couple of flatties in the tank, so I thought they must be on the chew today thankfully.

Tried out a few nippers first off for a small bream. I was wading up to my waist and there were literally hundreds of good sized whiting almost at my feet. Tried coaxing them with the nippers but they were having none of that. Must remember to grab some worms next outing.. There were some there at least 45cm.

No takers with the nippers, so switched to the old faithful and whammo!! Straight onto a nice 56cm flattie.

I usually let them go at that size but seeing my doctor has now ORDERED ME to eat more fish now, she was destined for tonight's dinner.

Anyway, chatting to Charmo about baits etc and he was using live poddies and SPs, so I offered him some of my whitebait and he was onto an equally large specimen almost right away. This fish did a few circles of his boat and just as he was getting the net under it..you guessed it...off like a bride's nighty! Just lip hooked.

Looks like I have another convert to old faithful WB. LOL

Charmo landed another flattie around the 50cm mark soon after. All the flatties today were very light in colour..not exactly sandy's and not dark enough for duskies. They must have just come in from outside.

The tide change happened soon after and the bream came on the bite then..landed a few just sized models but released 'em all as I'm not a big fan of them on the plate.

One thing with the tide changes in the lake, they seem to be 2 hours behind the Sydney Harbour times..High was supposed to be at 1030 and it didn't change in the lake until 1230.

So all in all...a nice day on the water, which was crystal clear today and negligible wind...perfect conditions for a leisurely fish.

Good to meet up with Charmo in his tinny.

Sorry, no pics today as I was wading and didn't want to leave the camera in the car.

Cheers,

Pete.

Grrr.... That would've been sooooo frustrating to see good whiting at your feet! :ranting2: At least you managed a good flattie for a meal, mate - just what the doctor ordered (pardon the pun). Charmo, I hear that you're heading over to the dark side referred to simply as "WB". Resist the dark forces! :074: Seriously, it sounds like the good, old whitebait definitely has its place as a bait in Narrabeen Lake. For them to challenge poddies, the flatties must love em! Good to see you back fishing, mate.

Sounds like a good session on the lake. Is the back end firing yet?? Usually the real big specimens start to bite about tis time of year.

Re: tide differentials. The entrance to the lake is Narrabeen sandstone which is slightly higher than sea level. This means that sometimes the lake is still draining as the ocean tide is rising if you can understand what I mean.

In other words when you get one big tide in the night ,all the water from that tide does not get out so it runs out alll day. A little difficult to work out but i worked it out from years of fishing for blackfish out the front of Caravan park.

Yes Davo, yesterday's was an incoming tide that was 2 hours after the high. It was fairly ripping in with strong flows up until 2 hours after the high. I agree with you about the entrance being higher than sea level and I wish they would take out some of that rock at the entrance to make it a permanent opening.

The silt levels around near the entrance have now returned to the pre-dredging levels and it won't be long until the entrance is closed once again, starting the whole process over.

The only plus side is that the lake is now well stocked with new fish and they will grow fast with all the food in the lake at present. Should make for some great fishing throughout the winter months.

I haven't fished the back of the lake for a while but I'm sure there are some monsters lurking up there by now. Might have to give it a shot in the next few weeks. The first target on my agenda now is those thumper whiting opposite the caravan park on worms...just too tempting to ignore.

The lake condition at present is the best I have seen it in a long time with the cleanest water in ages.

Narra Lake has to be one of the best little producers in Sydney for a great variety of species.

Cheers,

Pete.

good luck with the whiting. From memory they were at the drop off opposite the boat ramp when I was last there on the incoming tide (obviously waiting for crustaceans etc to wash over the drop off). Nippers might work. A lot easier to get than worms.

22/2.

Well those whiting are wily buggers. I went down again this afternoon, this time armed with fresh live bloodworms thinking this will sort them out........NOT!!!!

They didn't even sniff at them..I waded out to the channel in front of the boat ramp where they were 2 days ago swarming at my feet and they were there again. I fished for 3 hours and hardly got a nibble from them.

The small bream liked them though LOL...in swarms!!

Those whiting must be off the bite for some reason as I tried live nippers 2 days ago for the same result. Oh well, at least I tried.

Got one hellava scare today too.. I was in about waist deep water beside the channel when I felt something brushing against my leg..looked down and a dirty big black stingray had sidled up to me from behind and was nuzzling my bloody leg!!

I jumped about 6 feet straight up :1yikes: and he moved off into the channel thankfully.

I must be more careful in future...scared the living bejibbers out of me though.

Tally for the day was 2 just sized flatties and 3 similar sized bream...all released. Nice day on the water still.

Cheers,

Pete.

You seem to have the lake sorted, can you offer any tips to us.Me and the :wife: are staying on the lake for a few days next week and have not fished there much myself, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Reefa...If you are staying at the caravan park, your best bet is right in front of there

and fish into the channel. I suggest you wade out as it's only knee deep most times right to the main channel.

In there you will find bream, flatties, whiting and anything else swimming past.

Just down from there, on an incoming tide, you'll see a bunch of fellas who fish for blackfish every day. There is a good blackie hole right there and there have been some stonker blackies taken there lately.

I don't know if you have ever fished for blackies before, if not, read up on it a bit as it's a little more specialised than general fishing...do a search using the search function.

There's also a good article on the site on Narrabeen Lake in the articles section.here

The Woolies bridge is also a decent spot at times for flatties, bream, tailor etc.

Up the back of the lake lurk bigger flatties and they should be starting to come on about now.

Also, anywhere you see reeds on the banks are a good place to target bream. There are some good spots with reeds just along from the caravan park and around on Pittwater Road, so they might be worth a shot.

Another fairly good spot is Wimbledon Avenue, which has a kids playground in the middle of the "island" to keep the billy lids occupied while you fish.

Let me know if you need any other info by PM and I'll try to answer them for you.

Good luck and hope you bag out each day you are there. The lake at the moment is in great shape and fishing well.

Cheers,

Pete.

G,day Pete,

I knew you would venture back there! There were thumper whiting the other week, just so tempting.

I went down there yesterday myself, but this time armed with some live bloodworms AND some live nippers (cheers). Like you, the monsters were everywhere. The tide was nearing on high, about to turn. Geared up light and positioned myself to float the baits with the current straight over there noses...PERFECT.

NOT!

A few tarwhine, small bream and heaps of small whiting, but couldnt get the big buggers to bite. They were feeding though, I could see them burying there heads in the sand looking for food but they wouldnt touch my baits either mate. Fussy....

Not one flathead either...but good to see you got a few mate. Some days are better than others I guess.

PS: thanks for the tip about the ray...i wouldve dropped my rod I think....never seen any rays on the flats there before but have seen a couple of shovelnose sharks.

Those whiting sure are cagey buggers down there. talking to Flightmanager and he reckons the humble servo prawn usually does them in when nothing else works.

Might have to give them a shot now because they aint going to beat me :1badmood:

I'll give them a go this week sometime and post the results or otherwise.

Might catch you down there again.

Cheers,

Pete.

hey mate you been talking about whit bait is that just bought or are you catching it youself if so do you mind letting me no how

cheers danny

No Danny..it's bought whitebait as I don't know anywhere in Sydney you can catch your own.

Try and find the freshest WB you can find either at the fish markets, a fishmonger or the bait shop. The frozen stuff is not much good.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Pete.

I was out at Narrabeen on Saturday 24/02/07 using live beach worms. Was targetting whiting as well but only managed one at 20 cm and threw him back.

Caught alot of juvenile bream & trumpeter, which went back straight back in except for a few unlucky ones that couldn't avoid the loitering pelicans.

Was stoked when I landed a keeper bream but was also :mad3: when a pelican tried to snatch it out of my hands. I freaked out and dropped the rod somehow and the tip broke :1badmood: . Comtemplating whether I continue using my broken rod or setting up another rod in my car.. I chose to continue using my broken rod as I only had a bit of bait left. Next cast landed a 40 cm flatty so it brought a semi smile back to my face. It was pretty quiet after that as I fished out the rest of my bait.

All in all was a good day out. I don't know what to do with my rod situation.. ie is it repairable? or do i need to buy a new one.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul. What brand and type of rod is it? If it's a Shimano and is a two piece rod, Shimano can replace the top half.

If it's a one piece, you may be stuck with it.What's it made of? if it's just the tip only, you may be able to have the last guide attached so it still works OK.

Glad you scored one decent flattie aftert the little bream etc.

Those pelican down there are a pain at times. many a time I have had to hunt them away especially if you have a fish on as they will scoop it up before you can land it.thereby hooking themselves in the process.

I make sure I scare them away now as soon as I know I have a fish on because they are as quick as lightning.

Good luck with the rod.

Cheers,

Pete.

Thanks Pete

It is a 7'2" two piece graphite Shimano Starlo Stix. I doubt it would be covered under warranty as I dropped it but I'm glad I'd be able to get the top half from Shimano :1prop:

Its the lightest rod I've ever owned and I use it for SPs too. My girfriend bought it for my birthday & I really like it so definitely glad something can be done :1prop:
