harold Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 guys, have sold my boat (took 2 days on Boatpoint) and dont really want to sell off my rods and reels as i will buy a cruiser somt time next year when our son is bigger and doesnt scream from the minute he is on it until he gets off. Question, how would you prepare rods and reels for an extended storage in the garage?
Evets Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Harold, I'd seperate the reels from the rods, back off the drags, give the rods and reels a good clean and store them in a dustproof bag or blanket. Keep the rods well supported if you plan to keep them stored horizontally. evets
rooster Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 as above with plenty of grease in the reels Congratulations on the sale of your boat mate, I'm sure if you need a water fix someone will need a crew,
james1990 Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 If i were you and storing them for a while every now and then pull the reels out wind them to get the parts moving so they don't all ceaze up and a quick coat of dw40. When you go to use them again add a fresh coating of greese and lubricant to the drag etc. cheers james
johnno Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) and a quick coat of dw40. cheers james i would keep wd 40 away from a reels Reel i would pull them all down and give them a service so i know there was no salt etc in the reels and can not build up over time of none use. I would n,t put them in plastic bags as they would sweat and cloth bag or breathable container/box just to keep the dust and dirt out of them. They should then be ready to go when you get them out again. rods as already said if stored horz make sure there flat or vert will be fine but tips not leaning against walls. i would also give them a clean down and once stored lay a sheet over them but not against tips etc this will help keep all dust and grim of them also. james1990 Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 What does dw do to them? i use it on the outer casing, not on the line or the inards, is that still ok? cheers james
johnno Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 (edited) i have found wd attracts dirt and grim i used it on a bearing in a reel mate it rolled sweet but then within a week it was like someone poured salt and dirt in there. I have also heard that it breaks down rubber seals personally i try to keep sprays away from my reels now Edited March 21, 2007 by johnno
slothe Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Why is this so with regards to WD40. Would you prefer Inox
jessam Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 i use tackle gaurd every time after a fishing trip.then in winter i grease all the reels ready for summer
harold Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 guys thank you for the tips. will service them all this weekend. see you on the water in 08.
FletcherG1991 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 WD40 acts like a lubricant for a short amount of time but after a while it begins to corrode your gear eventually destroying it. Cheers, Fletcher
Guest Big-Banana Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 On all the reels that have a ratchet on them, put the ratchet on. Don't know why. Just a tip my tackle store owner gave me. Must work because they are all in top notch! Definitely loosen the drags off.
