Customising A Fibreglass Boat

Laredo

Recommended Posts

I have just bought a second hand fiberglass 4.6m centre console. It is fair old and the console looks a bit dinky and is stripped of wheel etc.

I have a very preliminary idea regarding customization of the boat :

I'd like to get a glasser to cut out and replace the existing console it with a new cleaner console further astern.

From the front of the new console I'd like a a raised casting deck about 8" high with storage hatches.

I'd just like to hear if anyone has and thought about problems/difficulties associated with this kind of job. Has anyone done anything similar and can anyone recommend a Sydney fibreglass specialist who knows his way around this kind of job. What kind of price could I expect for the work?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions (or warnings!) !

Cheers

I can't post the flicks because this site doesn't allow img linking apparently

(though I think I've done it before)

I wouldn't really want to try it myself on this boat since it would be my first time working with fibreglass

Check out "boat box". Ithink that is what they were called, they make off the shelf and custom consoles.

I rebuilt the console in my haines 445f (see headshot in members boats) and also built a casting deck/storage area in front of the console.

Nothing to using glass really. Get some advice from your local commercial fibreglass distributor and go from there.

My casting deck is framed in alum section (as used in some DMR road signs), the section is incredibly strong, acts as a drainage channel for the hatches as well as being very light for its avaliable strength.

Happy to help with any more info.

Cheers

Boat box is awesome ... and they're in Sydney! Thanks mate

(fishraider paid off where google failed)

here are some photos of the 80's model cruise craft. I think it may have had a cabin and been converted to centre console:
