mrmoshe
Waterspout off Sydney A large waterspout that cruised along Sydney's eastern suburbs coastline this afternoon has been captured on video. The tornado-like spout was filmed shortly before 1pm from the level 24 offices of Fairfax Media, publisher of smh.com.au, on Sussex Street, Sydney. Rob Webb, the Bureau of Meteorology's manager of weather services for NSW, said waterspouts are rapidly rotating masses of air and water beneath cloud. "Normally they don't last very long. It's even rarer for them to cross the coast, but not unheard of, and they can cause localised damage." "They will knock a boat around with very strong winds. It's pretty hazardous. We'd advise people to stay well clear. The best idea is if you see one, stay right out of its path." In April, another waterspout was captured on camera off the Illawarra coastline. "It was like a bit of a tornado happening. It was whipping up the water furiously at the base," a Coalcliff resident said at the time.
