Deschanel
Hi there guys, just purchased an old tinny which came with an old 1976 Evinrude 35Hp motor, which I believe is way over due for an overhaul. The flywheel was too easy to turn by hand and had no resistance. Does anyone know how involved it is to re-build a motor like this and the cost compared to doing it yourself or paying someone to do it? Also does anyone know where I could get it rebuilt at, around the Sutherland Shire way??? Cheers Dominic
Flightmanager
First thing I would do Dom , is get hold of a workshop manual , then decide if the job is within your capabilities. As with most things , pro labour is going to cost a bit . Ross
a boat
Hi Dom, get a compression gauge and do a compression check first. If the cylinders are uneven or low then it may be time for an overhaul. To give you a rough idea the parts cost to do a complete overhaul would be around the $500 mark. If you are able to do your self than that is worth spending on an engine of its age. To add labour to this would be another $1000 odd, which starts get to the point of over capitilising this engine. Do the compression test and post the results because you could just have stuck piston rings and a $15 can of power tune will clean the ring grooves and you will be good for another 30 odd years with just normal maintance. Saying that if you are get the compression back up it would be a good idea to service the cylinder head, thermostat and water pump. This is not that expensive and the head gasket could be the original one. Cheers, Huey.
