The minister says No Tax!

From today's West Australian:

Tackle tax will never happen: govt

The idea that the federal government would tax recreational fishing tackle is nonsense, Fisheries Minister Eric Abetz says.

The government has given a recreational fishing group, RecFish Australia, almost $200,000 to explore how a tackle tax could be introduced.

On the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's website is a one-page document revealing the $198,680 grant will be used to "explore the issues that need to be addressed on the concept of levies for the establishment of a secure, reliable and independent revenue stream from recreational fishers".

The money was provided under the $15 million Recreational Fishing Community Grants Program.

RecFish Australia has also been ordered to investigate other possible funding options for recreational fishing.

But a spokesman for Fisheries Minister Eric Abetz said such a tax had already been ruled out despite the minister having not yet received RecFish's final report.

"That was one option that they explored but I understand they themselves have ruled that proposal out," the spokesman told AAP.

"I can also categorically assure you that the federal government will not, has not and never will be supporting a tax on recreational fishing."

Labor's fisheries spokesman Kerry O'Brien on Wednesday raised serious concerns about the possibility of a tax.

"According to the government's announcement, the study will include an analysis of the benefits and costs of the new tax and the processes that need to be addressed to consider its implementation," Senator O'Brien said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

"This Howard government new tax would rip more money from working families during their annual school holidays and unfairly impact on recreational anglers and small tackle stores."

Mr Abetz's spokesman said Senator O'Brien's comments were nothing more than a "scare campaign".

"Unlike Kerry O'Brien who hasn't actually talked to the recreational fishing sector for two years ... we actually do communicate with the recreational fishing sector," the spokesman said.

Last Sunday, Senator O'Brien did speak to recreational fishers, delivering a speech at the Australian Fishing Tackle Association conference on the Gold Coast.

RecFish Australia was not immediately available for comment.

Hi to all

This is my first post on this site. Must admit I think it is the best fishing site on the internet.

Now, down to further taxing recreational fishermen. The government has just wasted $200 thousand of our money to find out how they can make more money from us and then say that no they aren't going to.

Typical government decision. Please let's stop wasting our money and get on with the real job at hand - improving our sport for all.

Regards Howard

Hi Fishraiders,

The plot thickens.

Today's Sydney Telegraph (page 2) reports the Federal Fisheries Minister's declaration that there will never (ever?) be a tax on fishing tackle.

But the report also quotes the CEO of EcoFish as stating nothing has yet been decided. Apparently, what's being considered is not a tax but a "levy". Presumably it will be well after the Federal election before any decision is finally made.

Of course, if a new fishing tackle tax (whoops, sorry levy) is introduced, it will have to be collected and administered by Australian tackle retailers or importers/wholesalers. And Australian fishing tackle consumers can buy from anywhere in the world. So it will always be up to us whether we choose to pay it.

Regards,

Bob
