a boat
Hi Wombat, I think a 2.4M boat will be too small for what you want to do. Also a 2.5HP on the back will struggle if you have to go against tide and wind. I would be looking at a boat around the 3.7-3.8M if it was me, especially if going out with a child. Just my thoughts, Huey.
Davemmm
As Huey said 3.7m (12ft) would be the most appropriate for that area and the smallest motor I would go to would be a 6hp. If the weather blows up you want to make sure you are safe. With some of the chop that gets up around that part of Botany Bay even a 6hp may struggle to keep you out of trouble some times.
