Botany Bay Wide Fad Produces A Few Dollies

Hi guys,

First trip out the the wide fad since it's been put back last week for the coming summer game fishing season.

The very first pass of the fad with a variety of small & medium skirts, jet heads & deep diving minnow produces a triple strike with all the smaller lure's in pink/blue/green colour's going off, these were all pretty small dolphin fish around the kilo mark or 65cm in length, but it was a start & after that expectations were

high for a few more fish to be caught. After a few more passes with the spread of lure's & no more taker's

it was decided to pull up close to the fad, berley up with some pillie cubes & float down some baits, but again

after an hour no takers & not much interest either as only a couple of fish were spotted down deeper at the

end of the berley trail.Even livies that a couple of other boats had didnt get any interest,so it was decided

that the lure spread go back out & troll a bit wider, here about 200m from the fad another small dollie was

picked up, again on a pink medium jet head, which was around 1kg mark & quickly brought in also.

but that was it for the day just the 4 dollies despite the good water colour & temp just over the 20degree mark.

Back in a bit closer out the front of botany bay heads,a few school's of kingies were found on the sounder &

taking the fresh squid strips for bait. These were as always great fun to catch & fight hard for there size but unfortunately at the 60 t0 62cm range were undersize & all released to grow another few centimetre's.

Hopefully all looks good for an early season on the hard fighting & great eating mahi mahi, let's hope so!

cheers;

steve

Greetings all

Sensible conservation is rqquired as you may all agree. There is a lot of hearsay that mentions that

dolphin fish, are extremely active fish, and unfortunately will bleed to death after being released.

I do feel that this could be highly true.

wouldnt it be more sensible to have a strict bag limit, rather than size restrictions for dolphin fish.

Otherwise howmany dolphin fish would be released to die soon after.

lets not be ignorant.

in south australia they have a well managed snapper fishery. charter boats there will not tolerate

catch and release , as they definitely know the death rates.

ilk

Completely agree, and this is what I was most crucial of Fisheries of. 65cm? Put a bag limit of 5 and watch them thrive in an environment which doesn't see them get flogged by 100 fishos every weekend.

Nexus,

Nice report, intertested in the current speed (from the north)and you said the water was nice and clear - 20C plus. The dollies are a good sign that the apex predators aren't far behind. Just remember if you're after the beakies troll a little wider than the actual FAD, beakies aren't keen on the all the activity.

Cheers, Rabs.
