Middle Harbour Fishing

Hey guys,

A mate and me are heading out to middle harbour on the weekend, never fished up there before, we primarily only fish the Hawkesbury.

We want to get into the kings, but are only new to it.

Can anyone give us some tips on where to pick up some yakka's and squid?

And also what sort of rigs are you using and at what depths to bring up the kingy's?

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice

Oh and by the way we were thinking of heading around Rose Bay or Chowder Bay area.

hey james this is how we go about chasing kings.1;pick up liveys at watsons bay,about 5.00am

2;downrigg live yakka and fresh squid strip about 2 meters above bottom,old mans hat to blue fish point,looking for bait balls and arcs,there and back

3 if we have no result by 8.00 we drop a pick and berly up,2 liveys out the back,bream rods out the side

4;keep the berly trail constant.start catching pinkys and work your way up

5;i've caught more kings on pealed prawns this year on 6 lb fire wire than on the live bait gear

ps the 6lb fire wire is a personal choice most people would say i'm mad, but till you have fought a 750mm model for 15 mins and landed it,do'nt knok it

Heard a few people mention that prawns have been the go the last month or so, have only been taking jew in the Hawkesbury on prawns also.

it really depends how the kings are behaving at the time, sometimes, they wont smash a thing, other times they will smash everything even bread, yes ive hook one up on bread when mucking around for bream.

ive found that persistence is key, if onething isnt working then try something else, the list of things to try are

- livies (fish and squid)

- larger artificials (6inch + slugos or other stickbaits)

- smaller artificials 3 inch power minnows

- unweighted squid strips

- unweighted pillies

- peel prawns

its always good to wind in ure livie or whatever slowly, the kings are curious and many times you will see them follow in a bait ure winding in, its good to have a plastic riged up ready to go when this happens. kings even follow in a bush of kelp. im gonna make teasers for raising kings because of this. but not sure what to use yet.

hey james,how about a little pinky,had a rat chase one up and would no leave it alone.after 3 mins off chucking every thing we had at it we let the pinky go the rat followed,next bait to hit the bottom[prawn]gets smashed by 750 model.been thinking off molding a pinky lead bomb for the downrigger

We've had kings follow little pinkies up many times without touching it, once though we had a jew come up and have a go and it ripped most of it off, very unexpected and surprising!
