One man is dead and emergency crews are searching for another possible victim after a boat crash in Botany Bay, near Sydney Airport, police say.

Water Police personnel were called to the Cooks River at Kyeemagh about 11.15am (AEDT) on Tuesday to reports of a man falling from a boat before the craft struck a rock wall near the airport runway.

"Water police located a man in his 70s in the water and performed CPR, however the man died at the scene," a police spokesman said.

"Police have been told a second person may have also been in the boat."

Crews continue to search the area for a second person, whom police have been unable to confirm as a man or woman.

Witness Michael Brennan told News Ltd he saw the four-metre runabout doing loops for about 10 minutes - with no one visible on board - before it ran into the rock wall.

The empty craft became stuck on rocks after the crash and was then dragged onto the beach, he said.
