Rocks Snapper

hey guys,

can any of our wonderful members suggest a combo for use on the rocks for some snapper?

i don't have a big budget so not too expensive

i have heard that sidecast reels are easy to use and mostly maintainence free, so maybe incorporate that? what do you guys think?

thanks in advance

Rock snapper specialists typically use overhead reels as they are ideal for distance casting with heavy lines and leads. An Alvey will do the job though, the only problems being possibly a bit less casting distance, hard on your thumb releasing heavy weights and slow retrieve making it hard to clear shallow reefs when retrieving the rig.

If going for an Alvey I would get the 650 E type (ie positive wind drag) with graphite spool. A rod of around 12ft with enough backbone to cast 4oz leads (an 8 wrap in fiberglass), would be suitable.

What area are you looking at fishing as the size of the reds and the distance required will need to be taken in account to get the most out of the setup ,I use spinning reels and overheads with both doing well on different rods to suit different locations .

I don't think a threadline would be a good choice. Once you lose a bit of line due to snags/ fraying on the rocks, the heavy line/ small spool will mean the line diammeter will drop quite a bit and you will lose casting distance due to friction.

nothing wrong with thredline's I use them with braid ,setup well you can fish spots that have not been fished from land before with a good cast ,since using this setup my catch rate has improved ,

these were caught just over 4 weeks ago on the central coast .

Do you have some more details on your threadline set up vgr? Whenever I have tried braid for casting any sort of distance it has been disasterous due to frequent wind knots, and I have gone back to mono for this sort of fishing.

use fireline ,dont try to hard late in the cast as will make the rod tip have a snaking action mixed with the spirals of line coming off the spool dont mix to well with limp braids ,

My set up is a certate 3500hd custom it takes just on 300 yards of 14 lbs fireline ,

rod is a Zziplex V max f2 ,14 foot long will cast up to 150 grams but it loves 125 grams

with a clip down bait ( whole cute fish ) you can get 130 plus meters with a bit of help from offshore winds

as the best reds are in close when you have the cold south westleys blowing after a big sea .

i have to agree with billfisher, i have tried threadlines before and when i get snagged and i lose some line, i lose casting distance due to friction. so effectively i need something that can cast pretty far, even though it may lose some line.

I would have thought you would have more friction with a full spool of mono than a spool of braid that has lost some line .

why are you getting snagged ? reds like soft bottom sand or gravel ,hard reef is not where you need to have your bait ,

mono or braid is not going make any different if you are getting snagged ,you need to fish grounds that have good bottom .you dont want to cast far past the hard stuff or you will get banjos and rays .

I guess it mostly depends on where your fishing mate. Here in Perth WA when chasing landbased snapper off rockwalls we like to use 11/12/13 foot rods with a fair bit of backbone like a 9 wrap, FSU5120 or similar as we usually fish with 25+ NW winds right in our face and need to use 8oz ~ 10oz sinkers to cast against the wind and lob out a big bait.

However the areas we fish dont require a far cast as the snapper tend to feed quite close in during and after a big storm so we usually load a large spin reel like a Spheros, Spinfisher etc, Alvey or OH with 12 ~ 15kg mono.

The snapper we usually get here are around 5 ~ 10kg and we usually get them on whole fish baits or a whole fresh/live calamari.
