jewgaffer
Im from Quakers hill Not to far from Blacktown sydney Thanks for the replies guys Hi Tom Hunt Bustoff hails from up my way in the Campbelltown area and was telling me that those big crayfish he caught are Georges River crayfish...... They can be still caught in the snaggy areas around the back of Kentlyn I believe and particularly up behind Wedderburn airport according to Bustoff but he said theres quite a bit of trecking to do to get down there... they used to be prolific in the off shoot creeks around the now residential suburb of St Helens Park and my kids and their friends caught heaps of them that were full of eggs in the run offs up there in the 70's.. Koalaboi
Hi, Be careful with traps in creeks as the bycatch often includes platypus. As a result, traps are illegal in Wyong Creek and I imagine they would be in others too. What platypus friendly ways are there of getting a feed of yabbies? Koalaboi VERY UNLIKELY A PLATYPUS WOULD BE ABLE TO FIT INTO A YABBIE TRAP AND THE TYPE OF BAIT USED WOULD DEFINATELY NOT BE CONDUSIVE TO THEIR PALATES OR DIETS ME THINKS. Koalaboi
Hi, On the threat to platypus from yabby traps check this site: www.rumbalara.eec.education.nsw.gov.au/.../yabby-rules.pdf Here's a quote from the site: "Platypus are found in river systems in NSW east of the Newell Highway which runs from Tocumwal in the south to Goondiwindi in the north. Platypus are also found in the Murray River downstream to Echuca Ec, in the Edward River downstream to Stevens Weir SW , and in the Murrumbidgee River downstream to Darlington Point DP . You must not use yabby traps in public waters (rivers, creeks, lakes) in these areas. If you want to catch yabbies in these waters, use lift or hoop nets where they are permitted. If you have permission to access farm dams, use your modified yabby traps there - but be careful as platypus are sometimes found in larger farm dams with vegetated banks. Remember, all traps and nets are illegal in notified trout waters except for the use of lift nets in Lake Eucumbene and Lake Jindabyne. NSWF1211R_DEC03.mo • PLATYPUS IMAGE COURTESY SYDNEY AQUARIUM. LONG NECK TURTLE IMAGE COURTESY NPWS Further information NSW Fisheries 1300 550 474 www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au National Parks and Wildlife Service 1300 361 967 www.npws.nsw.gov.au" I reckon any Raider would be terribly upset to harm one of these beautiful animals and if caught doing so the fines would be pretty big. Thomas Mattarelli
I have heard of a friend using a trap out Goulburn way and catching a little bugger from what i have heard they dont go for your bait they try and catch you yabbies
mark10187
Its apparently illegal to use opera house traps up and down the south coast because they reckon platypus get caught in the traps But you can use them in rural NSW but they have to be fitted with a 90mm metal ring but i found the best traps to use the days are those crab drop nets and atleast using these you wont get fined Cheers Mark
zook2001
Cracking yabbies Bustoff AS stewy said Lyell is a good place to try not as big as Bustoffs But still tasted very nice Usually plenty of yabbies and I have caught spiny or eastern freshwater in Lyell as big as Bustoffs, the ruler sticker given away by fisheries lists them as protected in notified trout water whilst the fishing guide does not so you may have to argue the point if the inspector sees you catch a monster crayfish. No nets of course in any trout waters execpt Jindy and Ecumbene. Regard Charles
land_based_fish0316
is it legal to catch them in the dharawal national park? I can not seem to find any info regarding this matter.
jordy
Only last year a dead platypus was found dead in an opera house trap in the upper georges river also two others tangled in set lines pretty sure these traps are banned there are definitely platypus there ive seen them fishing in the yak.The above incidents caused a lot of negative press towards fishos in the local papers.
