Squid And Kings Advice

Gday Guys,

Let me just say, ive only posted one or 2 things on this site – but ive read about a million threads, and its such a great site. Really great tips, stories and photos daily. So good stuff.

Ok, so some advice needed….

I go after kingies, trolling is only producing rats so I want to start using squid.

I can squid alright – but need the following questions answered – NB – I don’t have a downrigger or want to make one. Im saving up for one so I need to make do between now and then

- Do you freeze freshly caught squid or put them in the fridge?

- Is it better to have them live (e.g. catch them the morning before fishing)?

- As I have no downrigger, can I just put a big sinker on, a leader, and attach the squid to a hook in order to get them down far enough where the big kings are?

- How do I put the squid on the hook?

- Cant I just buy frozen squid from the bait shop instead of cathing my own?

- Also – is it better at high tide or low tide for squidding?

I know that’s a lot to ask, but any help would be great.

Get out there this weekend guys!!

yes you can freeze squid just dont put it into fresh water and if freezing try to remove all air from the bag use the zip lock bags if possible try to avoid freezer burn

live squid is the bait of choice

yes using a heavy sinker to weigh down the baits will work just fine downrigger isnt needed

for big squids use a 2 hook rig one hook going threw the top of the mantle and the 2nd hook at the bottom of the mantle for small squid 1 hook threw the top of the mantle is fine

you can buy fresh squid but catching your own is free and is offen alot better quality

and dont worry about the tides just get out there and catch them

It is very important to use a straight live bait hook otherwise baits will spin.

For yr sinker use a large jig and as kings are verys curious it will help atract them .

Fresh is best , live is better is a great motto.don't let squid touch fresh water and airtight is way to go.

Fresh frozen self caught is miles better than shop stuff.

On some days they will smash anything, other days they are fussy buggers.

When you pin the hood make sure it's in very point and middle.

Stinger hook either swing free or just through skin on head prefered.

Slow troll no more than 2 knts otherwise squid will drown.

Yakkas are more hardy and I troll up to 3knts at times.

Search the site , there's plenty on this as kings are what alot of guys target.

Hope this helps.

Cheers...steve....
