ssymmetri
hey everyone, i've been browsing a few saltwater reels and was wondering about some size differences. for example: Daiwa Saltiga Z 4500, spool holds pe3, 300m Shimano Stella SW 6000, spool hold pe3, 300m is this XXXX (thousand value) some arbitrary thing made up by each company? or is there a standard? just wondering if the shimano 6000 is physically as big as a daiwa 6000? or is how much the spool holds a better indication of size? thanks in advance
slinkymalinky
Can't comment on the size comparison between the Salitiga and Stella... but yes, the sizing is arbitrary and no, there's no standard. The numbers are really just model names to denote bigger vs smaller. Within each brand they approximately follow between model ranges.... a 4000 Stradic is about the same a 4000 Fireblood, etc. But across brands they change. But even within brands, there can be differences. I've got a Daiwa Sealine Bull 4500 and a Daiwa Exceller Oceano 4500 and the Sealine is waaaaay bigger than the Oceano. Think of them more like clothes sizes. They're useful to get a general fit but in a particular style, if one's too big small you know what the next size up or down is to look for. Cheers, Slinky

Jewhunter
Well put Slinky. I love that Exceler Oceano! I think you might need to crank the drag up on it though! Especially when you drop a lucanas jig with it on the 36's! Cheers, Grant.

gretsch
For what its worth, I fished along side a friend in Melville recently and he has a 4500 Saltiga and this looked to be the same size as my Stella SW 10000. His 6000 Saltiga looked similar to my SW 20000.
GregL
thanks for reminding me That's what you get for lulling yourself into believing that all those occy jigs can catch is Goats and Rod Rock Cod!! Slinky SO IT'S NOT JUST ME!!!! Still bought 2 more different ones the other day, them Jap dvd's it looks simple Re reel size. My findings, 4500 Saltiga similar to 6000 Stella. 6500 saltiga same as 20000 stella only size similar numbers are the 2500. In daiwa smaller reels can come with a number at the end like the 2508,2506,2504. The smaller the number at the end the shallower the spool. A "00" is a deep spool...... davester28
My findings, 4500 Saltiga similar to 6000 Stella. Greg - not quite true for the new Stella SWs but certainly correct for the old FA series. The new 8000 and 10000 Stella SWs are similar to the Saltiga 4500 in size. (The Stella 8000 spool is similar in size to the Saltiga 4500; the Stella 10000 has a deeper spool). The new Stella SW 6000 (incidentally, not available in Aus nor the US) is similar to the Certate Hyper 4000. For the new Stella SWs, equivalent body sizes as follows: 5000 = 6000 (= Certate Hyper 3500 = 4000) 8000 = 10000 (= Saltiga 4500) 18000 = 20000 (= Saltiga 6500) For the older Stella FAs: 5000 (= Certate Hyper 3500 = 4000) 6000 = 8000 (= Saltiga 4500) 10000 = 20000 (= Saltiga 6500) A good indication is to refer to the weight of the reel.
