Tailor In The Hacking

Went out on Friday to try for a few Tailor (for the smoker) or Flathead.Started about 7am after waiting for the waterfront construction guys to leave the ramp(sick of them).Tried Burraneer them Bundeena for 1 squid & 1 Bonnie. Buy about 12:30 things weren't looking to good,so we headed back to Lilli Pilli to find the bay alive with surface fish feeding. The next 2 hours were very hectic with the Tailor between 35cm to 48cm plus a mack tuna as a surprise for the Port.Caught them at Port Stevens years ago but not inside in Sydney. After about 10 fish we were only keeping fish that were deeply hooked & damaged, even so we reached our bag limit(which is far to much work cleaning) without trying, & left them biteing.Just before the storm the whole of the bay between Lilli Pilli & Yowie Bay was alive with fish, just like I remember from Toooooo long ago.Plenty of fillets were enjoyed on a Sunday Barbie in the rain.Just for those that don't rate Tailor on the plate, keep the fillets in the fridge for a day, then skin & cook, keeping them firms the flesh up making skinning easy & done in a tempura batter they are delicious...

Sounds like you were on the water at just the right time before the storm.

A hot Tailor session like that is a whole load of fun.

Did you stick a hook in one & send it out live?

You're right about the eating qualities of the humble tailor. Terrible if frozen but if bled when caught & kept fresh they are delicious.

They are also my fave fish in the smoker box by a long way.

Nice report & well done.

Cheers,

Grant.
