Hey Raiders

I am keen to make a cheap but decent live bait tank for our tinny boat, so will need to make it not too large. Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas about how to make one cheap?or if anyone has any good links to sites or books showing a good method of making one.

Thanks in advance!

Hiles

Here's mine I use in my tinny.

Simple set-up, battery operated aerators. The Jarvis walker white ones are the best battery op around. Get em at &&*&*&, big W etc for about $15. Sometimes are a different brand but just rebadged. You can run only one if you like and keep an eye on the battery.

Esky is a 25L willow from &&*&*& for $29. This one has an unhinged lid so I just riveted a couple of SS hinges on, gal would be fine. Put a couple of lid straps on made out of 4mm irrigation tube I dad laying around and a couple of wide foam rubber strips under the lid to support the pumps.Or you could use webbing or something else.

Best part is that it is almost dead quiet in the boat. I fill it with live herring and with 2 aerators running they'll stay alive for 6-8 hours without a water change but i'll usually change the water every 3-4 hrs anyway. Just half fill a bucket, scoop them all in, tip the esky out, poor the bucket into the esky and then top up the esky using the bucket. Hell of a lot easier and cheaper than running 12v pumps to pump in/out. Whole unit is self contained so you can use it on the jetty or whatever then put it straight in the boat ready to go full of livies.

Hi mate -

Here is a baittank that i designed and made up for my small 3.9m tinny so i could get into the Botany Bay kings

It was straight forward process and works really well - i am able to keep 30+ yellowtails alive no problems.

I actually use 2 pumps with my setup .. one 500gph to get the water into the tank from outside the boat and i also installed another 350gph pump inside the tank itself so i get get rid off the all the water when i'm finished for the day or about to move to another location - 60L is very heavy on the back of a small boat. All hose connections are quick connect connectors

Another reason i have a pump inside the tank with the quick connectors is so i can unplug the external pumps's hose and plug in the internal pump's hose into the inlet to circulate the water within the tank itself - great when you can't use all the livies and need to keep them alive overnight at home.

Cost wise... less than $80 and about 3 hours of work.

The pictures below were taken when i was building the setup - let me know if you want some finished pictures...

Cheers

30 and 50 litre mini otto bins from the big hardware shops are also good for making livie tanks . I made up one for a friend and it sits nicely on the back shelf of a Quintrex. And can be removed when not in use . I made it with a 50litre and the weight is noticeable when u are moving so id make the next one with the smaller sized 30L . Ive lost the pics but ill try get a new one to post up here.
