Outboard operating temp

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I have a Tohatsu M 40 A model outboard motor which I have rebuilt and am very pleased with. I do notice that it originaly had a thermostat installed and at the moment without the thermostat the water tempature is 70F degrees on my temp guage. I also notice that it seems a bit heavy on juce. I am wondering whether it is running a bit cold. Any ideas or a reference point to where the information can be gained. I am also looking for a manual.

Thanks Ian

Hi Justme,

All motors should have thermostats fitted as without them they may not reach correct operating temperature. 70F is way to cold for a motor to operate efficiently. Normal opeating temperature should be around 70C which about 160F. This cold running will affect performance and fuel economy.
