Rigs and fishing in nepean river!

So a few hours i just got back from fishing in the nepean river and i caught nothing ! Ive only just started fishing and i dunno how to tie knots an set up a good rig.

I had a float on my rod but i couldnt cast it heaps far out, could only get it out about 5-8 meters cause i had a tiny sinker on it. If i had a bigger sinker it would just take the float down. How can i keep the float at the top of the water while also having some weight to cast it far out?

Always what are some good knots for fishing? An would be good to see how to set up a good rig an such.

Also what should i use for bait to fish in the nepean river?
