Good point, although I guess its handy to have a decent cast to get you past the breakers.

when I was young and learning to fish I would practise on the football field. Best I got was with a 4 oz snapper lead and 15lb line on a 7" Alvey using a Butterworth MT8144 rod..... from the dead ball line to over the cross bar at the other end of the field so just over 100m

PS When it snaps however it went well out of the oval and was still going upwards when I lost sight of the sinker............... Im only new to flicking a Beach rod and reckon I have casted about 40m using a 10ft beach rod.

I'm 5/11 and 85kg

So what sort of distances are my fellow raiders able to launch their baits?

Any tips on technique?

there are a few variables that you need to look at for optimum casting. Some things you want to look at ;

1) Is your reel over or under filled. Generally it's best to have your line filled to 2 mm from the lip.

2) What kind of line are you using, and does it match your outfit? Braided lines generally cast better than mono but some braided lines cast better than others. If you're also using line that is too heavy for your outfit (you can usually find the line ratings for mono on the rod blank) it won't cast well.

3) Sinker or lure weight, if your sinker or lure is too heavy or too light for your blank you'll find that it won't cast as well.

4) Practice as with any thing casting needs practice. I find for longer cast I use a flatter trajectory, rather than trying it into the heavens. I'd also recommend you learn how to pendulum cast.

5) If you're running a running sinker rig keep also in mind that your trace length has a bearing on the distance of your cast longer it is more awkward it is to cast.

Hope these few pointers help

I would put myself in the 100M bracket, maybe a little over but when it comes to distance there are always better casters,there are a lot of variables, weight of line, type of reel, Rod etc. If you go to youtube you will see swing casters and even world championships, those guys can swing a piece of led around 300M, typically it is with very low weights, a pilchard weighs about 60 grams and a lot of the distant caserss all talk about a 40 - 60 gram weight... so after a "flick" or a "whip" like that what is left of the bait once it hits the water? a small sinker and a prawn maybe... but then how much effect the small sinker has in a ocean current remains the question but I suppose it would depend on what you are after.

check out this link for an idea on what I am talking about.

4 oz and bait .187 mts is my best,if you use a clip down rig 220 mts plus ,there is a lot more to distance than picking up a beach rod ,the UK distance is just over 300 yards not meters ,the 300 yards has been cast by 2 australian casters ,these diatance are cast with 80 lbs shock leader and .31 dia line with abu 6500 or umxl 2 or 3's reels, the world record was cast with 6600 black max abu magged by the caster. you can push braid to the same and futher with the use of tappered braid leaders and very light braid ,there is no comps for this style so there is no real point in seeing how far it will go ,

theres a few factors to take into account u cannot pick what wind direction u want and those guys are not casting with bait the bait would considerably reduce the drag

if you want to get big distance with bait you have to use a clip down rig ,its a simple rig to use keeps everthing in tight and stops it swing around and cuting down your diatance ,you also have to use a good rod and know how to cast . In Australia we cast a comp with level line (no leaders just the same line all the way )its cast with up to 4 ozs or 112 grams and an artifical bait hanging at least 9 inchs and been above the lead .the bait is 100 mill x 13 mill dowl ,it flaps around like bait and puts considerably more drag on the cast ,Australin record is 187 mts
