Massive kings & Snapper - over the Easter period

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This year I organized 3 groups to head over the ditch to NZ for 4 days of fishing each aboard a charter boat out of Warkworth just north of Auckland.

We were picked up by Brett & his wife at the airport & headed up to Sandspit where the boat was moored... here started some awesome trips.

The 4 days we fished each produced something different, the wind was always blowing 20 knots but the island is great and you can always find somewhere to get out of the wind. You can fish the shallows with light jig heads and on Mike's second cast of the trip he bagged a solid 8kg snapper. Or get amoungst the rough stuff in the washes where we managed some great fish to 10kg.

The trips were highlighted by sight casting big kings on plastics & poppers amoungst the salmon schools & live baiting some monsters. The biggest king was caught on a live bait by Pete and pulled some serious string cracking the scales at 33kg. The biggest king on plastics was 20kg & I managed to get spooled by one on the Sustain 5000.

The sight of 4 or 5 big kings creating a bow wave behind your popper or fighting over your 3kg live salmon is something that has to be seen to be believed!

The biggest 2 snapper we caught were by myself & Brett with both just nudging over 10kg on Gulp soft plastics & Martin with a solid 8kg model.

This was my 5th trip to NZ & if you are into your soft plasticing for snapper & chasing kings I still believe this is the best place you could ever go at a reasonable price.

What an awesome trip!!! That's what I want to do with the boys next year. What gear did you have to take?

G'day Listy,

We take all our own jigging gear, soft plastic rods & reels and soft plastics. But that's just because we want to use our own gear. I couldn't think of a better place to do both types of fishing as well as the scenery is spectacular. Every person I have ever taken over there always goes back again. You can't beat the skipper going diving while your fishing & getting lobsters for dinner!

Cheers
