locodave
If you fish the Hawkebury you know it gets cold!! Has anyone had one of those portable heaters on board? And if you do, does it actually make a difference or not worth the $100+ price tag?
Catchin Jack
Been looking at the same thing, there's the butane ones with canisters and 12v cigarette lighter socket ones, I think the butane ones would be fine as the 12v ones would draw to much power and suck the life out of a battery. LeoB
G'day Yeah I'd definitely stay away from 12v as well, unless it has a power supply independent of your starting battery. Heaters are nothing more than a big resistor. Obviously I would be ultra vigilant with gas heaters on a boat, keeping the fire extinguisher accessible. Always be sure to keep well away from your fuel source, and regularly check the heater for rust or damage. Cheers Leo

bisso
Whilst i agree its nice to keep warm, i dont like the idea of having an extremely flammable source for heating. fibreglass burns too fast!!! just put on more clothes! has anyone considered hexamine tablets for a fuel source for heat? we used to use these in the army to cook with and are quite safe from my experience. surely if gas was the best alternative we would have had mini cartridges to cook with and able to transport around safely with. seems to me the hex tablets were the better/safest option.. Just a thought! Cheers Edited June 21, 2012 by bisso
DrownNprawns
At last years boat show there was a small heater that ran on diesel, the larger ones where hot water heaters as well very quiet safe (no flames or emissions) compact. for cabin boats could be ducted throughout cabin with vents out to cockpit toastie warm with hot water to keep hands warm to Edited June 21, 2012 by DavidA
Benzeenees
You guys are getting soft! Left Mossy Point (near Batemans Bay) at 6.45am on Wednesday having scraped the ice off the windscreen as we left Surf Beach. I was wearing thermal underwear, trousers, 2 skivies, a heavy sweater, a polofleece jacket and a windproof jacket + beanie and gloves. That's nearly more than I wear when skiing! And I was still cold. I didn't warm up til we returned to the ramp at 2pm. Young people today don't know what cold is!!! And we were in a side console boat with minimal protection. And we hardly caught anything. Edited June 22, 2012 by Benzeenees
