Gatte
Hello again guys and girls, I caught myself a handful of yellow tail the other day and have read on this forum that they are a terrific bait. Sadly couldn't get out the same day to use them as live baits but have them tucked in the freezer for a later date. All of them are 20-25cm in length and to me this seems a little big to use the whole fish. Wondering what the thoughts are out there for the best way to bait them in the surf for... Well anything, sharks, salmon, Taylor...dare I say a nice Jew? Thanks everyone Gatts Edited August 20, 2012 by Gatts
rjc123
For sharks snell a couple of 10/0's and fish it whole. Cut a few slits in it and maybe open up its belly to make it extra appealing. For salmon and tailor, cut into 3-4 pieces and put on a single hook. Alternatively snell a fillet of one. If you want a big jew or nice shark then try butterflying it. I have butterflied 35cm tailor for jews so they aren't too big. Cheers, Tom

hnsgeq
Don't be concerned about the size of the yellowtail. Big baits are a good thing in the right environment! Try the butterfly fillet. Works a treat on all sorts of species. Best of luck.
