nepean river herring n mullet

went down to the nepean today and caught a heap of herring n mullet for fun, kept a few of each for bait.

i know mullet works well for bait as strips or whole but has anyone got an opinion on fresh water herring for bait,i kept a few around 5-6" i think they might go alright of the beach targeting tailor, salmon, flatties. ???
