Mutt
Just tried to set the boat up for the first time in a few months for a few hours fishing tomorrow with the boys. Have had trouble with the steering seizing up before and have loosened it with oil etc before. Tonight though, there was a crack and the steering wheel loosened but no steering to the outboard! There is also a crunchy/crackling sound from under the steering wheel. I'm a bit of a novice at this - was wondering of this sounds serious or is it something that could be easily fixed. I live near Hurstville and woud love to get it repaired ASAP! Understand site regulations so happy for PM.
oz_brett
hate to break bad news but you might have broke the cable that runs from the steering wheel to the motor. If this is the case you will need to replace the cable. Brett
Mutt
Thought so - by the way it's a 2003 quintrex Coastrunner with a 60hp yamaha. Any ballpark figure on cost if snapped cable?.

herdsman
Hello mate, this happened to me before, what you need to do is remove cable completely from steering wheel all the way to engine, then take it to whitworths and they will give you one the same size, but make sure its not shorter, you will need a mate to help you install it though. Captain Spanner
Also very important that when you install it there are no forced bends in it or it will be stiff and break things further up the line
Mutt
Great advice, thank you so much. Any advice on how to break it to my mates that we're not fishing tomorrow!!!!
Guest Aussie007
Great advice, thank you so much. Any advice on how to break it to my mates that we're not fishing tomorrow!!!! cable price depends on length from steering helm to engine, if u were trying to turn the steering wheel to free up a stuck steering cable at the engine u might need a complete new steering system if u have broken the helm, a complete new steering kit with a steering wheel can be bought online for around $

Mutt
Ended up costing $500 that was with 3 hours labour. Took the boat out on Monday and travelled over 60km, went like a dream!
