kinghightide
Hi people, Im after some information in regards to fishing Port Hacking/Bate Bay. We rarely fish these waterways but will give it a shot next week. Can anyone steer us at some spots where we could find Red Rock Cod, Gurnard and Flatties? We are fishing out of a 5 metre run-about. I have heard of Osborne Shoals and Merries Reef and some people have said it can be dangerous in some conditions, can someone elaborate on this! It would be greatly appreciated! Geoff
Merries Reef is in the N/E corner of the bay. It's a bit of a hike from the river & depending on sea conditions should be approached with caution as it can break without warning. The attached map shows Osborne Shoals . The reef area around Jibbon Bommie is worth a try but watch the bommie carefully as it breaks most of the time. Flatties , head East & try at different depths from about 25 meters to as wide as your comfortable Geoff
kinghightide
Thanks for the info Geoff! What can be caught at Shark Island and approx how far is Osborne Shoals from Dolans Bay?
Paikea
Osborne Shoals are approx 6.5 KM's from Dolans Bay. You might find some flats outside a line between Jibbon Head and Long Nose Point, the Northern point of Bate Bay. Start a drift there and if you do not get any bites move out to deeper water (drifting the same line) in say 10 M increments until you find them. Good Luck Cheers Paikea

Paikea
I forgot to add, the North end of Shark Island is a well recognised spot to catch live bait. (Yellowtail)

Less well known is that it is also a great spot to catch big Drummer. Use bread burley, throw it in so that it drifts East along the Northern edge of the island. Follow up with a Royal Red prawn and the smallest ball sinker that will allow you to cast the bait right on top of the hook. Simple rig but works a treat. I once caught a 10 pound Drummer there (speared)

Be careful of the white water breaking over the area although if you are not in amongst that water you are not in the best spot.

Good Luck

Cheers

Paikea
Paikea
In nominating changing your drift in 10M increments I forgot to clarify that this refers to 10M increases in depth of water. Hope that I did not confuse anyone. Cheers Paikea
filthmonger
The northern side of Shark Island is actually a deep hole surrounded by shallower water. Its a great spot for yakkas and slimys and live baiting for kings.
