Guest mike2153
Hi guys I recently bought a downrigger that I'm using a 8lb bomb on, my boat is a 4.4m fibreglass boat now the problem is my transom is timber, right at the back of the transom is solid obviously but up top where the rear rod holders sit is just thin marine ply that would rip apart with the weight of the bomb straight away, you can mount the downrigger on a rail but I'm worries if I install a rail along the side of the hull on the top timber piece it will rip apart. Just wondering if anyone has mounted a downrigger on a fibreglass runabout and how I could re enforce the transom some how?

sifisho
I don't know about the mount but unless you are in very deep water you won't need an 8lb bomb. You can get away with 3lb in most situations up to about 20m. That might help you a bit
Paikea
Why mount it on the transom? Mine is mounted on the gunwale in line with the back of the helm seat so that I can wind it up or down without having to leave the seat./ Cheers Paikea

ace
You can get mounts that slip into your rod holders should solve your problem
