Public Moorings - Any at The Basin?

Thanks guys,

Sorry I should have been clearer. It is the courtesy moorings I am after. Looking at the charts they are pink. The waterways charts only appear to show where moorings are, the don't distinguish between the private (yellow) and the courtesy (pink)

The waterways boating maps do show courtesy moorings.... they are shown as a pinkish beehive, like the police emergency moorings are shown as blue beehives. I don't think there are any at The Basin, at least not in close to shore. Note the yellow moorings are privately owned and the orangey red ones are commercially owned, mostly by the various clubs, marinas and co-ops.

I looked at the waterways map for Pittwater and didn't see any courtesy moorings anywhere.... is this right? I thoughts there were some around Taylor's Bay and up that western shore, but maybe they're gone now.

Public moorings in the Cowan Creek and Broken Bay system are mostly owned by National Parks. They have some additional rules regarding their use.

Hi Testlab,

Really appreciate the feedback but am i looking as the wrong thing?

Im looking at 2 locations on the maritime website and neither shows me this detail.

Location 1 - Boating Maps : http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/docs/maps/pittwater.pdf

Location 2 - Mooring Maps : http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/docs/recboat/mooringmap-pittwater.pdf

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

I go to the basin a lot as we have a mooring there. I assure you I have never seen a public buoy there. I reckon 90% of the boats are on moorings they have no right to be on so it is fine to pick up one. As one of the previous posts says, just vacate when asked. Having said that it is a bit funny, we have had several boats over the years come up to us and tell us we are on their mooring. They bank on the fact that most are there "illegally" and will move when challenged. It is a bit funny when I tell them we own the thing so they should go away. They invariably say something like "oh, I am sorry, I have picked the wrong mooring, our one is over there"

Thanks for the note Harold. I'm actually going to camp overnight so can you see and issues with me leaving the boat tied up to a vacant one?

I'm also interested in camping there and leaving the boat somewhere nearby so any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Dean maybe I wasn't clear before. That is the right waterways map and there are no public moorings in Pittwater according to the maps. The mooring map just shows where maritime have set aside areas where one may apply for a mooring.

On the waterways map you can see a blue Police mooring marked EP at The Basin. Public moorings look like this but are in pink, you can see some on the Cowan Creek map.

As for leaving a boat on a mooring at The Basin while camping. At this time of year it's a busy place so maybe midweek you'd be OK, but from Friday onwards you would be risking someone's ire.
