luderick -angler Posted October 27, 2014 Share Posted October 27, 2014 Well it was a welcome return the rocks thsi weekend, after a stint at the wily brown trout of the Central West on Saturday managing to hook and be defeated at the wily Jedi ways of a large brown in a log jammed pool and my sith ways were not enough to prevent premature escape of this powerful foe i was determined to take revenge on the luderick! So armed with a Sith's weapon of choice (a sportex 662 and avon royal) I took my apprentice for a session of the rocks south of Sydney, we fished a placelong forgotten by many called Tabbigai (warning of a serious note this is a remote ledge not for the beginner or inexperienced so please do not vwnture there unless wit ha person armed with local know how) we arrived after a short 25 min walk along the fire trail and descended the terraced cliffs to a nice ledge with good wash the making tide was perfect as the swell flattend a little! First drift down missed the hook up second drift fish on! Well by 10am we had our new bag limit weach in the net and were releasing fish, dropping fish it was a down a drift! We had been waiting for a day like this little wind a 2 ft NE windswell and perfect run in! The luderick are running of the stones! I always pity the luderick if the wily ways of the trout have defeated me and the luderick are the recipients of my failure! We kept 16 as there were standing orders for fillets all round among friends we kept the 32 - 35cm fish and the flesh was firm and translucent they were well conditioned and fat! I have been chasing them since I was old enough to hold a rod (still have that 6ft Butterworth glass soft spin stick somewhere) I have two passions trout on fly and luderick! Haven't fished Tabbigai since the late 90`s and don't intend too any time soon, to big of a walk for me lol, good on you and your apprentice for doing the walk and climb, you need to be pretty fit to do that. Very nice catch and a great day out. 2 ravines further south of there, is a great place to spend the night, high up away from the water and out of the weather. Ron Howes Posted October 28, 2014 Share Posted October 28, 2014 Royce, What side of Tabbigai did you fish, was it on the right of oil waste pipeline where the iron steps down to the mid-section ledge were once there, before being removed to discourage fishermen fishing this spot. This is where you can make your way down to water level. Years ago my brothers and I used to fish this every chance weather would permit. Walking around front of headland is pretty safe , however fishing Shaky the rock ledge and the horse shoe gutter is where most fishermen come to grief. Over from the horse shoe to the right is a small gutter that we used to call the Blue hole that we fished on an afternoon tide and the fish would only come in when gutter was in the shadows. The horseshoe and the blue hole is an ideal spot to use small bobby corks. Note:- My brother who has fished this spot a hundred times was picked up by a rouge wave well back from the horseshoe gutter and smashed into the cliff face rocks and broke his leg below knee and it swept him into gutter. He was lucky to get out as he was able to crawl up barnacle encrusted rocks in horse shoe gutter and was lifted out on a stretcher by police rescue unit. Lucky he was fishing with my brother and my brother in-law as they were able to assist and contact rescue crews. This spot requires life vests and should not be fished alone. I just checked the bag limit online and it's still says (unfortunately) 20? I love fishing luderick but I don't keep them, or I keep a couple very rarely when I have nothing in the fridge, so I'm not too concerned with bag limit but the other day I was catching plenty and keeping them in a large puddle of water as usual so they cannot go back to the skool and spook them, I suddenly asked myself if I was eligible for a fine if I had say 25 ludericks or so in a puddle of water? Knowing that they would all go back afterwards (I fish them back with a large net). I tried to find online but couldn't really, does anyone have an idea about that? Just not to be thrown in the "chat section", I also attach a picture of a few Sydney (near honeycomb) fish I got on Sunday arvo, in 1.5 h just before dusk, mixed sizes but a stonker 40 cm weighting 1.2 or 1.3 kg, fat like a football, and a little 33 cm pig. I don't think there is any evidence to say whether it does or doesn't however the intention from the angler is to put the extras back and keep the bag limit. If I am right on my interpretation of the new "possession limit" will stop that from happening as you're only allowed X amount in you possession at one time - dead or alive. Cream, No, the stink pipes entrance is at the end of Sir Joseph Banks Drive. Half way down that road at the end of the chain wire fence of the refinery there is a track off to the left, you can either walk along that fence line and you will hit Tabbigai or you can park at the whale watching area in the National Park and walk south along the cliff face to the same place. There used to be houses built into the cliff face on the right hand side of the ravine and you can see the ruins. At the bottom of the ravine is some large triangular blocks, I was always told that they were tank/landing barge traps Interesting side note: If you stop at the end of Sir Joseph Banks Drive and walk up the hill in front of you, there is a WWII gun emplacement in amongst the dunes or what is left of it. Matt Yeah I reckon they scare the shit out the school, if it's not one of these mad pristine spots where they see one fisho every 6 months anyway! There might not be evidence as some say but observation is a good enough evidence for me, put it that way: When they re on feeding mode you catch 1,2,3, every cast, you drop one during the 4th fight you're gone bro! Next for you is to find a new school or wait X minutes until a new one or same one comes back, can be 2 mins, can be 30, can be never! I'd like the opinion on the elders on that one, it is interesting to know, I've only been fishing for them for a year not even but I caught so many already that I can observe my first patterns and that is one of them. luderick -angler Posted October 30, 2014 Author Share Posted October 30, 2014 Tc I have fished for them non stop for 30 plus years and it depends on the day you can drop a fish and it spooked them or you can drop a shite load and keep catching them there's no pattern I'll never work them out! Dad never did and no bull he would have it overall of us in experience and knowledge he was still working them outcrop his death bed! He taught me tou never stop learning! The other day I dropped my first but got a bag go figure! It can be different in the estuary where they may spook easier but they are not like trout which once spooked can shut down for a day! They funny little buggers and I have the greatest respect for them, I like their fishing, it is stylish and challenging enough to be fun, add a centerpin reel in the equation and it is top stuff! Pattern or not they will amuse me forever I guess. But I will not release them for sure, I observed them underwater for long hours and see their little school behaves as a single fish, they all move the same direction except when they're grazing and even then, they remain all pretty lined up. I funnily noticed pigs belonging to them too, a few times I've seen some fat ones, sometimes 2 + kg pig in the middle of the school, behaving exactly like them and swimming exactly like them and with them in total coordination. I'm not living in "lucky" enough places to observe mega schools / multi-schools together and I don't know how they would behave with a shitload of competition for food around them, I'm sure chucking em back would not change shit but trust me, those little balls of 7 / 12 stressed Sydney fishes are like pilchards, not one dares leaving the pack, I cannot explain why, I would make no hunch, but I noticed they react as 1!
