burnsie Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Hi guys Just wondering what type of material the higher grade reels use for their metal drag washers? I'm interested if anyone has replaced their metal washers with brass or any other metal and how it has worked out? Thanks Burnsie
Crossfire63 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Burnsie When Ive had to do it and its rare that you need to replace metal washers I use stainless
Crossfire63 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Once they've been lapped in teamed up with Carbon fibre washers they are as smooth as silk. I've mainly done it on Tiagra's, Penn Internationals and Everoll's but no reason to believe that it wouldn't work on smaller reels as well
burnsie Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 Awesome I've got access to a lath at work so was thinking I might make some up and have a play around with them to see if they do make a difference. The reason I ask about brass was a guy said a friend of his use to make brass ones and it was super smooth as well.
Twinfisher 4.9 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I think that the Carbonex washers and suitable lube is more important than the metal. If they are completely flat and smooth, s/s or brass does probably not make a lot of difference.

I've read testimonials from people who have replaced their felt washers with Carbonex and they say that not only does the Carbonex make all the difference, but the improvement is HUGE! I've lapped all my stainless steel washers now and I can tell you that they all needed it. The drags are much better now, but I'm ordering a sheet of Carbonex and complete the process of upgrading the drags. Then, all I will need is a co-operative fish to test them out.
