fishless scotty
Just wondering what tackle everyone uses for salmon, like what rods, reels, line weight etc. Preparing for the holidays and looking forward to getting stuck into some huge salmon. troutboy
Lots of the boys are using standard bream gear for the salmon although if you wish to take a couple for the table i would suggest upsizing the gear to 4kg or so to decrease the fight time. cheers troutboy
bombora
Hiya fishless; if we are talking from a boat, then I reckon there isn't a sambo on earth which can't be landed in five minutes or so on 2kg Fireline. Just keep the rod high and get em to jump heaps to knacker em quick!!! Lures wise, the usual; bass minnows, sluggos, plus the smallest River2Sea slug in the white/pearl colour, homemade bucktail jigs in white and also home made dowell poppers about 3 inches long in white or Qantas colours. Favor jigs these days cause of the single hooks; dont like tearing up their faces with trebles. Oh yeah plus a few home made eyes flies for putting behind a popping cork for when they are really fussy. Best rod I've used in past few years was an orphan yankee-made Daiwa rod; 8 ft long, 12 inch rear grip, perfect for 2kg Fireline and amazing how much longer it casts than the standard 6 to 7ft rod. fishless scotty
I am fishing mainly from a boat. I have a 1-3kg berkley dropshot rod and feels like it doesn't have the power to stop a rampaging salmon. Also would 125 feet of 4lb fireline be enough. Matrix
I got my first salmon(2.5kg) ever on my 2-4kg breamin rod, and boy was I knackered after the tussle. I've also caught a 3kg specimen on a 1000 sized reel with 4lb, this fella fought even harder but never took more than 1/3 of my line out.
Narralakes
Never get sick of salmon on the fly gear Andrew, I'd catch them all day if possible. In my opinion, one of the best sports fish around. Fishless, no. 7 flyrod, intermediate line, eye/candies/small popper flies do it for me.
