Curse of the "Tournament" and new way to describe Urgency.

I should have known when Steve dislocated his shoulder whilst launching my "Tournament" from the "Hole in the Wall" at Sylvania Waters that this boat was cursed.

Launching from St George Motor Boat Club the last time that I took it out (to show the prospective buyer who bought it) I felt a sharp pain in my left shoulder (same as Steve). Got confirmation today following an MRI yesterday that I have torn a part of the ligaments around the rotator cuff.(Whatever that is.) My surgeon is not keen to operate to fix it and instead told me to do a whole lot of exercises using a big rubber band. He also mentioned that a part of the problem was the date on my birth certificate.

When I asked him should I do the exercises ASAP or wait awhile he answered; No, RFN! Apparently that stands for RIGHT f#$%^&* NOW! Gotta use that in future, can think of all sorts of situations when it may be helpful. Like, can you bring me a drink love? RFN. Yea Right, good luck with that one.

On the other hand it could be helpful if a deckie is not responding quickly enough to the Captain's orders. ( I am kidding Steve, honest)

Cheers

I know from bitter experience that shoulders tears can take a lot of repairing ( in my case it also included a sharp knife. Rivet gun and bailing twine) muscle strength will help with shoulder stability. I hope it improves quickly for you and you can dodge the knife mate.

Just for clarity. It was a re-dislocation I had at the ramp. It seems I had been living with half my labrum detached since the first dislocation. So you trying to run me down with your boat! was not the cause of my surgery. Just the cause of no bloody fishing that day [emoji6]

Paikea,

Due to a number of old injuries, I am still continuing with various exercises to keep me going (past the 60 mark now)

Some days they can be a pain in the arse to do, but I do feel better (usually when I have finished them) :D

So just bite the bullet, and start doing those exercises RFN. :074:

So does this mean someone else might have to drive the new boat???????

J

I have got until August to get it good enough to drive the boat but if you are free around that time?

Should have asked him if he can fix that up for you.

And a few other things as well. Shame we cannot go to Repco and get spare parts.

Hey Yowie, always good to hear from a fellow sufferer, I just loathe exercise but guess that I will have to make the effort if I am ever to land a big Kingie. Starting tomorrow, promise!

Like the fact that you have adopted my "urgency" acronym. Puts a whole new meaning into getting going.

Cheers all.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have had both my shoulders repaired, so i know what you are experiencing.

Do the exercises but don't overdo it, put too much pressure on the ligament and you could tear it further.

After the repairs it took me 9 months of exercises before it felt normal.

Good luck with it

Thank you for the advice, I am doing the exercises under the supervision of a professional who seems to know what he is doing. Big question, did you have to get yours operated on to fix it and if so how did they do it (Key hole surgery?)and is it as painful afterwards as everyone seems to suggest?

Mine is apparently classified as a Major tear which, from the MRI looks as though there is only around 10% of the ligament still attached. Bugger!

Cheers (not a lot to cheer about)

My Right arm was a major tear, Had Key hole Surgery by Dr Hitchen,

They grind the bone and trim the ligament, then screw 4 metal anchors

into the bone and stitch the ligament to the anchors,

It has to form a blood supply from the bone to the ligament to be successful.

6 weeks in a sling, sleeping was the major problem. The pain is constant

never seems to go away, need pain killers to sleep but not too bad during the day

If I tore it again I would have no hesitation in getting it repaired again.

They don't fix themselves they only get worse.

Ohh Sh*#! I thought that might be the case.

Thanks for the info, my doc says he wants to avoid surgery, claims that there are cases where people have lived a normal life for decades without the ligament that I have torn being attached. The theory as he explained it to me is that you strengthen the other muscles around the joint (by exercise) and they eventually take over the main load.

Think that I might have to get a second opinion.

If you want to force the issue tell them that you can't sleep because of the pain,

then they will reconsider, they did not want to do my left shoulder but it kept getting

worse until I could not sleep properly, then they said they would have to fix it.

So much better once they are fixed. well worth the six months that you can't use the arm.

Try to get a referral to Dr Hitchen at Miranda, he specialises in knees and shoulders.

Mate. My Mrs is on orthopaedics at St Georges private. The guy who fixed me after you run me over ;) was Stella.

But got to agree with Grandad. 6 months recovery but wasn't getting better on its own.

It may be keyhole but under the skin it's a LOT of work.

Yes, my mother had the same done to her last year. It took her about a year for full recovery. She still does the exercises to strengthen the muscles around it too.

I had a tendon popping out of my ankle few years ago. I could live with it, but every time it popped out, it hurt and stopped me from playing sport. I eventually did the surgery, just wish I did it earlier.

Second opinion would be good :)
