veck
Greetings Fishoes Went fishing last night of a beach at the Gong. As I was walking along the beach looking for a gutter I cam across an old fella who claimed he was having a quiet night. Im confident beach fishing after a wet and I wasn’t disappointed. My 15 pound line got cut off twice before I modified to a 50 pound trace. Within 30min I had my first run. Took me close to 15 min to get the Jew out. I was jumping around and shouting with excitement as I hadn’t claimed a decent Jew for some years (4.8 kg). Actually not since I last fished the same beach. I spent the next 20 min picking up the fish, smoking cigs and convincing myself that I was some great white hunter. Damn I enjoyed hearing the Jew slapping the beach with its tail. Once the excitement settled and I composed myself I re-rigged and sent the line out on another mission. At this stage I didn’t give a rats arse if another fish was going to be caught. I had only finished tightening the line when the rod bent over again. This time the drag went crazy, I started to think I was going to run out of line. I convinced myself that it was probably a shark as it was a hell of a lot heavier then the last fish. I estimate it took me close to 30min to bring the fish close to shore, however it felt more like an hour. As the fish came closer I started to walk into the water, as I couldn’t beach it, it was just too heavy. To my astonishment it was another Jew, this time it was almost twice the size. I started to panic, as I couldn’t pull the damn thing out so I walked into deeper water thinking I could grab it under the gills and haul it out. I had this massive Jew right next to me, I attempted to grab it but fumbled, and in my excitement I failed to see the next set of waves. I got smashed by a wave, fell over and just managed to hold onto my rod. When I stood up the tension was gone and so was the Jew of my dreams. Wet and cold I decided to call it a day. On my way back to the car park I passed the old fisho again and showed him my fish with some confidence. We had a little chat and then he said, “ let me show you something”. In a heshen bag hidden under the sand was a massive Jew. I mean this thing made mine look juvenile in size, it was similar to the one I had just missed around the 8-9 kg mark. The old fella looked 70+ and somehow managed to haul this monster out. Made me realise it takes more than strength to drag a fish like this out. If I weren’t so cold and wet I would have like to get a few pointers from this fine old fisho. Feeling damn tied today a work, coupled with a head cold, but am still smiling and cant wait for another night session down the Gong. How would other fishoes negotiate the capture of such a fish ? And don’t tell me you would walk in the water and wrestle it out.
Guest MarkD
Great report From the description of thie fight I'd hazard a guess that your size estimates are on the low side? What length were the caught and lost fish? Disclaimer: Author may never have caught a jewish
Jewhunter
Well done on the Jew Veck & bad luck on the second one It sounds as though your fishing a bit light & with too little line for chasing Jew. Fish 3- 8kgs are regarded as schoolies & you should knock them over in no time at all. It's when you hook one 20kgs plus that you will need more & heavier line. Try using 15kg line & your 50lb trace should be fine. When a good fish comes in just wait until it beaches itself & walk up to it ( watch those bloddy waves! ) & gill it. After a while they just run out of water & will beach themselves so its pretty easy to do. Be careful gilling a Jew. You have to press your fingers right against the inside of the gill plate. If you go into the gills themselves you will get sliced to shreds & you will have to cut your fingers out of them. A Jews gill rakers will let your fingers go in but they will not come out! Well done again & thanks for the good report. Cheers

Disclaimer: Author may never have caught a jewish dear skeptic, the caught fish is short of a meter and the other i estimate was around 50-70cm longer but a lot wider. Guest MarkD
dear skeptic, the caught fish is short of a meter and the other i estimate was around 50-70cm longer but a lot wider. Just for clarity, I was suggesting that your fish were heavier than you indicated, so my scepticism was in your favour, apologies if this was understood, just wanted to be sure

wakd
Hi Veck, With regard to what Mark was saying you may want to look here: http://www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au/recreation...sh_with_a_ruler You said your landed fish was under a meter, lets say 90cm. That fish is probably around 7kg or so. The bigger one you lost was 50-70cm longer - lets say 150cm, that fish would weigh around 34kg!!! Any jew over a meter should be at very least 10kg. Not doubting you at all, but think you may have underestimated weights (unusual for a fisho! ). Cheers, Ben
Gibbofisho
A 45 cm Jew has to weigh more than 1kg
Bashir
No need to run into the water to grab the fish, just keep the pressure on the fish gaining line when you can and let the waves do the rest off the work. Even a monster jew should be relatively simple stuff providing you are a patient bloke.
kevvie
those fisheries weights are not even ballpark. Trust me the fish vary incredibly in weight depending on where they're caught
Tony Soprano
A 45 cm Jew has to weigh more than 1kg Not necessarily, I caught a 52cm one that only weighed 1.5kg...
Jewhunter
Ben's on the money with his estimates IMO. That fisheries site however is a load of crap, it also has a weight for a 70cm bream... You're not telling me that you've never caught a 70cm Bream are you Swoffa?!!!!!!!
