Narrabeen Lagoon

Due back in oz for another 3 month trip in a few weeks time.  Just wondered if the lagoon was still open to the sea and if its fishing ok ?  On our last visit I fished it with the wife a few times and it was very easy relaxed fishing.  Nothing big but very relaxing.  We fished that deepish bit where they have the Sunday market.

Will be staying at our daughters in MacPherson Street,Warriewood.  Any local fishos want to take this old pommy out for a fishing session well up for it :D

Yes it is still open at the moment. They have recently pulled sand out from the entrance back to 300m approx. upstream of the ocean street bridge, its all around 1m - 2m deep through this section. I don't often fish the lagoon  - prefer the rocks or beach myself, but did recently get 5 good size whiting in 45mins wading the sand flats near the caravan park on light gear and small poppers. Great fun and a nice way to fish on hot day!

Thanks for that good info Short, most appreciated.:D  Its where we took the grandkids on our last trip and they loved it.  Catching a few tiddlers made their day and they were telling all their friends.  Small bream and puffer fish.  It was virtually a bite every cast.

My main fishing will be done on the beach and elsewhere.  Here are a few pictures from Narrabeen Lagoon from last year :D

Hi Snatcher;

Before I moved to Tassie I fished the Lake for many years.

Could I offer a couple of suggestions?

The secret of the lake is to fish light.

I used a maximum of 3kg for spinning and 2kg or so for bait.

There are basically only two spots in the lake that has a fair run in it.

One is at the entrance and the other is around Pittwater Road bridge.

The rest of the Lake has minimal to no run.

So it is essential to use the lightest sinker you can

I used the smallest ball sinker I could find (size00 I think.)

No trace and just a piece of red Plastic tubing above the hook and the sinker above that..

This also works in a run as the bait is not anchored..

Sometimes you may be smashed up on this gear as there are some strange beasties in there. (Also big ones!!)

A light rod and matching reel with a good drag is the way to go.

Hope this info will help you enjoy a prolific but quite difficult place to wet a line.

Cheers.

Roger.

Many thanks for that info Roger.  What you are saying is basically what we do.   A very light rig with prawn or squid and a heavier livebaiting set up.

I know that a few beasties do lurk in the lagoon.  Was reading up that Father and son Shannon and Jake Garrod have had 2 big jewies out of there 15kg and 21kg.  Also someone got a 78cm flathead.  On our last trip over an angler also hooked a blue ringed octopus there !!!!!   When the sea channel is open goodness knows what has swum into there :D

Be with you all shortly,we are due to fly off from Newcastle International Airport 2 weeks tomorrow.

That's about the same as it looks now. Lookout is a great  spot to scope the gutters in that part of the beach before a night fishing session.

Heard someone pulled 1m diameter ray out of the lagoon over the weekend, best do the stingray shuffle if wading the flats. Never know what is going to pop up in there!

If you are 'targeting' rays - just wait till lagoon is closed again (in few months?) - it will will hard to miss them even when casting with closed eyes.

Are they mostly stingrays in the lagoon ? Caught one off Collaroy beach on our last trip.  Basically will just fish the lagoon if the wife or grandsons want to fish, otherwise i will be trying beach and rock marks. :D  Will be based at our daughters at Warriewoodso please feel free to recommend any local marks to try or drop me a pm.   Cheers

Oldfella gave a very good advice above about the lake.  I used to fish there at night and really saw a lot of rays patrolling the area left to right, right to left in the  closed lake and spooking other fish. I  can not comment on day time hours. Common catch there is undersized whiting or bream, sometimes legal flathead.

More info will follow in PM later .
