Baitrunner/Liveliner/Baitfeeder Options?

Calling all the experts, guy and gals,

I have been looking at a Shimano Baitrunner for quite some time now as i realistically need an upgrade from my general 2-5kg rod, I use my current rod from local pond mud marlin fights to just everyday land based use, have caught heaps of different fish and even some decent monsters on it over the years, now the rod is still fine and works well, not the best but was a great bang for buck a couple of years ago, (Jarvis Walker Maxi Spin combo?) the originally Reel shat itself after a year or so, but the rods still great, so bang went on the old trusty Shimano IX2000r, bottom drag, very basic but works amazing, and is yet to let me down, picked it up the day the reel shat itself in a bargain bin for $10 at my local tackle shop, still going strong 2 years on.

Now, i am more than happy to keep that combo the way it is, works good and reel is very reliable, just looking for something that can handle some bigger monsters but not full on serious game.

Have used baitrunner's before and have always wanted one, love the feel, the way they work, just always amazed me at how good they are at hooking fish. Looking for a new rod along with a baitrunner of some sort, i want something that is a bit beefy and can use off the jetty along with on a boat and in the kayak. looking for decent rod too.

My issue is there are so many different Baitrunners/LiveLiners/Baitfeeder etc in the market now?

What do you all recommend and why?

With so many different brands seem to now do all the same thing, what is the best bang for buck so to speak, im not one to normally cheap out on fishing gear but would like to keep to a $200 budget for the reel and/or including a decent new spinning or boat road.

Fin-Nor?Shimano?Penn?Rovex?

Obviously it seems that Shimano is the best when it comes to baitrunners but little pricey on the budget, i am open to anything else along with the mighty baitrunner, don't trust Rovex personally due to pricing seem a  bit cheap IMO, but there are so many different models nowadays. Pricing wise leaning towards the Fin-Nor Bait Teaser,

Damn Good Pricing for all of them on Dinga, just the toss up now. I would Rather spend under the $200 budget including the rod so can get some decent braid. Money not an issue just want to try and stick to a budget on an overall combo including line for once.

Rovex Nitrium$40.00

Shimano OC $98.00

Shimano D $140.00

Shimano CI4 $203.00

Fin-Nor Bait Teaser $89.00

Fin-Nor Bait Teaser Combo $149.00

Penn 560L Bait Teaser rod $99.00

Penn SSV $129.00

Plenty of different combos and options to go with, and always smashing prices on Dinga, help me make a good decision.

The old reliable for those who cant remember what they look like, I'm sure everyone has had one of these at some point>>>

Shimano's baitrunners have the best reputation, particularly older B series. I would shop around and try to find D series for the price of OC series on sale and spend the rest of the budget for the rod.

As for the trust to Rovex  baitrunners - as far as I am aware it is an Australian brand which is also exported by JW to UK.  I guess you might find some first hand feedback on UK local mud marlin forums/FB groups - if you are interested in it. Though I would not expect much as it is a low-cost reel with plenty of baitrunners parts.

Considering the Bait teaser rod is worth about $50 on dinga the Shimano D series with the bait teaser rod brings the D series to price of the OC, $149 with the 6000 D series seems like a steal, thanks for the info @savit i think ill go with that,

I call the Shimano Baitrunner the Hilux of reels. Unbreakable lol. I have the 8000 and 4000. Cant fault them

thats what i like to hear, what did you pair the 8000D with, what rod and braid?, differences between the 8 and 6 only seem to be mm/m of line

the 8000 i got as a combo with the beast master rod 10-15kg. The 4000 i bought to go with a Crony rod 7ft 1 peice 8-10kg.

these reels are designed to go with Powerpro braid line which is also one of my favorites.

So you think pair it up with the free Fin-Nor Bait Teaser 7ft 8-12kg Medium-Heavy Action boat rod?

Gives you couple of different options on Dinga in the combo, which is good considering its like $9 for a rod with that combo, either 5-10kg, 8-12kg or 10-15kg

Whatever you choose  - do not forget about  another 5% Dinga's Fishraiders discount ?

I have a shimano d series in 8000, a thunnus 4000, and a penn live liner.   I have also caught a 73cm snapper on a shimano OC 6000 that wasn’t mine.

They all go pretty good though.

Id consider the 4000 size as a step up with 20lb braid and 4 - 8 kg graphite rod. It has a bit more grunt than your other combo bit should still be fun waiting for the bigger fish. Brand wise I don’t think you can go wrong with penn or shimano. Just be aware baitrunners are heavier than an equivalent standard spin reel.

Hey mate, I would stay away from the Shimano D series. I have 2 mates that own several of these and all they have had is constant problems. Shimano stopped making these about 18months back, so if you purchase one and have problems your in for a lot of grief finding replacement parts! Keep in mind these guys wash there gear thoroughly after every fish weekly, and have them serviced every 3-6months, like I do with mine.

IFFFF you can find a BTR B series,,, BUY IT! They are bullet proof. Between myself and my brother, we have 7 shimano 4500 btr's, 3 still brand new in the box, we bought the last of the stocks in Sydney when they stopped making them 5 years ago..... The other 4 we use weekly, and after nearly 10 years are going strong!

For your budget of $200, Id look at the Fin Nor, curious to try them myself. My latest purchase was a Shimano Thunnus BTR, abit more expense $270 approx., its not as loud in bait runner mode as the B series of the Shimano' BTRS, but its a lot lighter for sure!

But I'd say unless you want to up your budget to $270 odd, consider a Fin Nor. The penn live liner's are quite heavy and under decent drag feel sticky

Best of luck in your purchase mate

Dan
