Will Wright
Hey guys, I’m buying a new mid range fly rod and reel - the airflo apex combo. It’s a 4wt combo and I will be using it for stream and river trout and for the smaller trout in dams. Anyone got any recommendations on what brand and lb tippet and leader I should get? kingie chaser
Well I dont fly any more but I always had a tapered leader attached to the main line which would finish in 6lb & then used to add either a copolymer or fluro leader as the leader would shorten & if Iwanted to change the float rate of the end of the leader. The use of either would depend on the time of year & if I was wanting to use floating(dry) or sinking fly. So I would have a roll of both in & 6lb in my kit, the fluro for sinking & the copolymer for floating. This would explain the difference in both material. https://blog.fullingmill.com/co-polymer-or-fluorocarbon-leaders/ Edited December 26, 2020 by kingie chaser
noelm
I am a long way from an expert, but do enjoy a bit of salt water fly fishing, and all I use is some quality mono in the breaking strain I choose (usually about 6-8lb) and joined to the fly line with a double Uni knot, been using that system for ages.
